Indian weddings are renowned for their elaborate festivities, and a new restaurant now offers guests a taste of this celebratory experience. Madam Ji Ki Shaadi, which translates to “Madam Ji Is Getting Married,” opened on March 4 at 154 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. The restaurant is the brainchild of chef Abishek Sharma, who specializes in catering destination weddings and operates two other Indian restaurants in Manhattan—Rang and Swagat. This latest venture is designed to capture every aspect of an Indian wedding, from the food and décor to the vibrant energy of the occasion.

“The inspiration for Madam Ji Ki Shaadi stems from the vibrant and joyous celebrations of Indian weddings. These events are immersive experiences filled with music, dance, rituals, and incredible food,” Sharma explained. “I wanted to capture that energy and create a space where every night feels like a big fat Bollywood wedding. My personal experiences with wedding catering and the way food connects people during these celebrations led me to craft this unique dining concept.”

Guests are welcomed with the option of receiving a traditional bindi and can choose a $65 pre-fixe wedding menu, which includes insights into the rituals that shape an Indian wedding. The experience begins with a sparkling welcome drink and golgappe—crispy semolina spheres stuffed with spiced potatoes—served at the bar. Following the welcome drinks, diners are escorted to their seats for a feast that mirrors the lavish meals typically served at Indian weddings. The menu features dishes such as beetroot chaat, chili chicken bao, and chipotle paneer or chicken tikka kebabs. A vegetarian menu is also available for those who prefer plant-based options.

“The tasting menu will unfold like a wedding feast, with small bites, appetizers, mains, and dessert, just like at a traditional wedding reception,” Sharma said. “It’s about joy, indulgence, and creating unforgettable memories.”

A centerpiece of each dining table is a round golden thali tray, which holds an assortment of dishes traditionally enjoyed after an Indian wedding ceremony. Accompanying the meal are naan, chutneys, and rice. Some of the main offerings include vegetable truffle harvest kofta croquettes served in a spiced cashew sauce, Delhi-style Makhani chicken or paneer in a rich, buttery tomato sauce, coconut shrimp or vegetable curry, and slow-cooked gosht royale (goat).

“Weddings are about food, and every wedding thali is a carefully curated journey of flavors, textures, and emotions,” Sharma explained. “Our tasting menu features a variety of regional Indian dishes, each representing a different aspect of an Indian wedding feast.”

To end the meal on a sweet note, a seasonal dessert is served, which is currently gajar halwa kulfi—a warm spiced carrot pudding accompanied by ice cream. Additionally, each guest receives a bag of Indian sweets to take home, a gesture reminiscent of the favors given at Indian weddings. Guests can also opt for wine or cocktail pairings for an additional $35.

“From the moment guests walk in, I want them to feel like they’ve stepped into an extravagant shaadi (wedding),” Sharma shared. “The restaurant is divided into themed sections decorated to evoke different wedding moments, like the bright yellow section for the Haldi prosperity ceremony, blue and green symbolizing the pre-wedding Sangeet dance, and eye-popping red representing the color worn by the brides. DJ-curated playlists featuring a mix of classic Indian wedding beats and Bollywood-style music will play all night.”

When it comes to attire, diners are encouraged to dress in formal wedding attire or traditional Indian outfits to embrace the theme, though casual wear is also welcome. The restaurant aims to cater to everyone, including those who are preparing for an upcoming wedding or reminiscing about past celebrations. The space is also available for private events.

“We are creating a platform for wedding planners, DJs, and wedding fashion and décor companies to bring in their clients and experience what an Indian wedding truly feels like,” Sharma said. “This space is more than just a restaurant: it’s a cultural hub, a showcase of the grandeur, flavors, and vibrancy of Indian weddings. Whether it’s for event inspiration, a special night out, or simply to indulge in the joy of a shaadi feast, Madam Ji Ki Shaadi is where the magic happens.”

On November 12, 2024, the opening reception of “Splendor of Silk & Beyond,” a unique initiative by the International Museum of The Sarees (IM of The Saree), was held. This event marked an important cultural milestone, showcasing the diversity and beauty of traditional attire. The reception welcomed the public along with leaders from Indian-South Asian, Caribbean, and Japanese diaspora organizations. Attendees participated in a vibrant exhibition featuring exotic and vintage apparel, including sarees, sherwanis, kurtas, dhotis, lehengas, and kimonos from various communities, including diplomatic, judicial, professional, and designer circles, according to a press release by the organizers.

The exhibit, which ran from October 15 to December 11, 2024, was hosted at the City College of New York. “Those interested in viewing this eccentric and fashionable exhibition of legendary icons’ apparel, accessories, short films, and audios in the Cohen Gallery & Archives should RSVP at imofthesaree@gmail.com and ask for private curations,” stated the organizers.

This curation boasted a wide variety of garments, including Banarasi sarees, South Indian sarees, and historically significant Indo-Caribbean and South American apparel. Unable to find suitable options, she started a foundation and consulting agency to push fashion designers and retailers toward more inclusive fashion choices. A decade ago, she had no corporate partners, but today, major brands like Tommy Hilfiger, which launched its Tommy Adaptive line, and retailers such as Target and Victoria’s Secret have embraced adaptive fashion. Scheier’s foundation, Runway of Dreams, will showcase its work at this year’s New York Fashion Week with 60 models, all of whom have various disabilities. “This is a vocal population, and it wants to be considered a consumer,” Scheier emphasized.

For Jessica Long, a decorated para swimmer for Team USA, adaptive fashion holds personal significance. Long, 32, is competing in her sixth Paralympics, having started winning gold medals at just 12 years old. As a double amputee, one of the hardest things she faced growing up was finding shoes that worked with her prosthetics. “There’s not many things in my life that make me feel very disabled, but shoe shopping, and clothes shopping in general, has always been the hardest,” Long shared.

Although shopping has become easier as Long has grown more confident, finding suitable shoes remains a challenge. “What people might not think about is that shoes can completely throw off my walking … if they’re too heavy,” she explained.

Like Levine, Long appreciates the improvements made by brands like Ralph Lauren, which, in collaboration with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, surveyed para athletes a year ago to better understand their needs. Ralph Lauren’s designs for Team USA’s opening and closing ceremony outfits reflect this input. “I’ve seen so much improvement in the mobility for us,” Long noted in an interview before the Paralympics. “It’s those little pieces that mean the most, I think, to the para athletes. I think it’s going to be really exciting when we all dress up.”

A US citizen fell victim to a deceptive scheme, purchasing imitation jewelry valued at ₹300 for an exorbitant ₹6 crore from a store owner in Rajasthan, as stated by the police.

Cherish, identified as a resident of the United States, acquired silver jewelry with gold plating from an establishment located in Johri Bazaar, Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Upon showcasing the jewelry at an exhibition in the US in April of the current year, it was revealed to be counterfeit. Subsequently, Cherish traveled to India to confront Gaurav Soni, the proprietor of the shop.

Despite Cherish’s accusations, the shop owner, Gaurav Soni, refuted the claims. Consequently, the American woman lodged a formal complaint with the Jaipur Police. Additionally, she sought assistance from the US embassy, prompting the Jaipur Police to initiate an investigation into the matter.

The complainant informed the authorities that her acquaintance with Gaurav Soni commenced via Instagram in 2022. Over the course of the last two years, she allegedly disbursed ₹6 crore for fraudulent jewelry, according to officials.

Authorities disclosed that both Gaurav Soni and his father Rajendra Soni are currently evading law enforcement. Efforts are underway to apprehend the fugitives, with special teams being deployed for this purpose, as confirmed by an official.

Heralding a massive coup for the homegrown content creator community, celebrated Indian couturier Archana Kochhar has roped in leading social media influencers of Indian origin as showstoppers for her fashion outings at New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. Her New York Fashion Week showcase was hosted in association with The Society at Hall Of Mirrors on September 11.

Delhi-based husband-wife duo, Gaurav Taneja and Ritu Rathee Taneja, of Flying Beast fame, were joined by Mumbai-based lifestyle influencer Aashna Hedge to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week, while Mumbai-based entertainment influencer Nagma Mirajkar will walk the runway at London Fashion Week, setting the stage for increased representation of Indian influencer presenters at global platforms.

A first of its kind nonequity grant program,, Beauty&You India, created by The Estee Lauder Companies (ELC) and NYKAA, looks to discover, spotlight, and propel the next generation of Indian beauty brands.

A rare, one-of-a-kind opportunity for founders to create, build and scale in one of the most exciting beauty markets in the world. The programme aims to support India-focused companies and entrepreneurs through a competitive application process. Awards to both pre-launch and in-market premium beauty concepts will be given.

Award recipients will benefit from access to The Estee Lauder Companies and Nykaa relationships and expertise across the beauty ecosystem in order to nurture emerging ideas that amplify Indian voices and address unmet needs in the categories of skincare, makeup, hair care, and fragrance.

While a regular men’s kurta with a traditional print is in vogue this season, Vikrant laid fashion goals as he flaunted his effortlessly dapper style at Jio Mami Film Festival Panel in an elegant off-white kurta and a pair of cream trousers teamed with a floral print bandi.

The pictures surfacing from the event are enough to raise the bar of ethnic style goals for men this summer. Putting the fashion police on immediate alert while fans took cues to slay at the next traditional outing, the pictures feature Vikrant donning a plain cream-coloured silk kurta which he wore with sleeves rolled up and paired with similar coloured trousers.

To frame the style around traditions with a contemporary accent, Vikrant layered the simple look with an elegant bandi that sported blue floral prints and booti detailing all over. The bandi came with a breast pocket and two at the bottom while sealing a sophisticated aesthetic. Accessorising his look with a pair of reading glasses, Vikrant completed his attire with a pair of blue footwear from Christian Louboutin. Striking a chic pose in the backdrop of an exotic seaside location lined with palm trees, Vikrant showed how to look classy and stylish while embracing the cultural side.

In a statement, HUL said over the last decade, Fair & Lovely’s advertising has evolved to communicate a message of women’s empowerment. The brand’s vision is to adopt a holistic approach to beauty that cares for people, that must be inclusive and diverse – for everyone, everywhere.

In early 2019, the brand’s communication moved away from the benefits of fairness, whitening and skin lightening, towards glow, even tone, skin clarity and radiance, which are holistic measures of healthy skin.

HUL also removed from Fair & Lovely’s packaging, words such as ‘fair/fairness’, ‘white/whitening’, and ‘light/lightening’ that could indicate a fairness-led transformation. The cameo with two faces showing shade transformation, as well as the shade guides were removed from the packs. The Company will continue to evolve its advertising, to feature women of different skin tones, representative of the variety of beauty across India.

The new name is awaiting regulatory approvals and HUL expects to change the name in the next few months.
