Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced free bus travel for NEET UG 2026 candidates, but the decision has sparked debate over the need for free metro travel instead.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently announced that the state government will provide free travel for all candidates appearing for the upcoming NEET UG 2026 re-exam, scheduled for June 21. Students will be allowed to travel without charge on all Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus routes in the National Capital.
In her announcement, Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that this initiative aims to minimize travel-related challenges for students on a day that is crucial for their future. However, the announcement has elicited mixed reactions on social media.
Many users expressed that while the gesture is appreciated, making the Delhi Metro free would have been a more effective solution. Critics noted that DTC buses often face severe traffic congestion and delays, which could hinder students from reaching their exam venues on time.
On May 29, CM Gupta took to social media platform X to share the news, stating, “To support candidates appearing for NEET-UG 2026 on June 21, the Delhi Government will provide free travel in all DTC buses upon presentation of a valid admit card. No student should face inconvenience on a day that holds such importance for their future.”
Despite the positive intent behind the initiative, it has sparked widespread debate online. Several users highlighted logistical concerns, with one user commenting, “If they depend on DTC buses, then they will miss their NEET exam. If they had to do so, she should have made the metro free; most children will travel by metro.”
Another user suggested that if the government genuinely wanted to assist students, it should have collaborated with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to provide free metro travel, as many local students prefer using the metro for their commutes.
The free travel initiative for NEET candidates was first introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government. In response to requests from concerned parents, Punjab authorities decided to offer free travel on all state-run Punjab Roadways buses for the re-exam date. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal spoke with NEET students, and upon their request for assistance, the Punjab government decided to waive the fare for all candidates taking the exam on the scheduled date.
As discussions continue, it remains to be seen whether the Delhi government will reconsider its approach to support NEET aspirants more effectively. The mixed response to the free bus travel initiative highlights the need for a comprehensive solution that addresses the transportation challenges faced by students on such an important day.
According to The Sunday Guardian, the debate surrounding the free travel initiative underscores the importance of considering the most effective means of transportation for students during critical exam periods.
