Assort Health has appointed Dr. Sunil “Sunny” Eappen as its first Chief Medical Officer to lead clinical operations and enhance AI integration for patient workflows.
Healthcare artificial intelligence platform Assort Health has announced the appointment of Dr. Sunil “Sunny” Eappen as its inaugural Chief Medical Officer (CMO). This strategic move brings a seasoned hospital administrator and practicing clinician into the company’s executive leadership team at a time when health systems across the United States are grappling with significant administrative burdens, workforce shortages, and delays in patient care access.
Dr. Eappen boasts over three decades of experience in clinical, operational, and executive leadership roles. He most recently served as the president and CEO of the University of Vermont Health Network, where he oversaw a six-hospital academic system employing approximately 14,000 individuals and serving one million patients across Vermont and northern New York.
Prior to his tenure at the University of Vermont Health Network, Eappen held the position of chief medical officer and senior vice president of medical affairs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he also briefly served as interim president. Earlier in his career, he was the chief medical officer and chair of anesthesiology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Eappen is the son of Indian immigrants. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, followed by a medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Eappen later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Yale School of Management and completed his medical residency and fellowship training in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
In his new role at Assort Health, Eappen will concentrate on deploying AI agents designed to manage patient-facing workflows. These workflows include appointment scheduling, referral routing, care gap management, document processing, and prescription refills. The platform operates on an engine that leverages millions of patient interactions and clinical protocols, effectively matching patient scheduling with the operational logic of health systems to enhance patient access without increasing provider workloads.
Assort Health co-founders Jon Wang and Jeffery Liu highlighted that Eappen’s extensive experience in leading large health networks will be instrumental in ensuring that the technology aligns seamlessly with clinical workflows and electronic health record systems. Rather than necessitating a complete restructuring of health organizations around artificial intelligence, Eappen will collaborate with health system executives to implement AI tools that optimize capacity and streamline operations.
This appointment marks a significant step for Assort Health as it aims to enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery through innovative technology solutions. Eappen’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in navigating the complexities of integrating AI into existing healthcare frameworks.
According to The American Bazaar, Eappen’s expertise will help shape the future of patient care at Assort Health.
