Dr. Nirav Shah, former Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has officially announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, aiming to challenge incumbent Susan Collins.
On July 9, Dr. Nirav Shah declared his campaign for the United States Senate, launching the ‘Defeat Susan Collins Town Hall Tour,’ which will include a series of town hall meetings across Maine.
“Today I am excited to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate to defeat Susan Collins,” Shah stated. He criticized Collins for perpetuating a system that he believes harms Maine residents, saying, “For too long, Susan Collins has upheld a corrupt system that hurts Mainers.”
Shah emphasized that his campaign welcomes supporters of former Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, asserting that it embodies the values important to Mainers. “This campaign represents the Maine values we all care about: building a state and country where everyone can get ahead, not just the privileged few, respecting and loving our neighbors, and holding Donald Trump and Susan Collins accountable,” he said.
He expressed his belief that establishment politicians have failed the electorate, asserting that Maine deserves a senator who will fight for its residents. “I will be that fighter,” Shah declared.
Shah is a proponent of Medicare for All, stating, “Nobody in the wealthiest country on earth should go bankrupt over a medical bill.” He also advocates for ensuring that billionaires and large corporations pay their fair share of taxes. On immigration, he pledged to rein in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, end the targeting of immigrants, and work towards ceasing reckless foreign wars.
In his critique of Collins, Shah pointed out that her voting record over her thirty years in Washington has contributed to policies that have led to “skyrocketing costs, runaway corruption, and a government that is only interested in enriching itself.” He added, “The longer she stays, the less Maine families have to show for it.”
Shah also highlighted Collins’ support for the appointment of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, which he argued played a role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, significantly impacting women’s rights across the nation. “After three decades, this state deserves a senator who fights for it rather than one who keeps finding new ways to explain why she could not,” he said.
“This race is about everyday Mainers,” Shah continued. “I’ve shown up and fought for you before, and I am ready to do it again as your next United States Senator.”
According to state law, the Maine Democratic Party has the option to replace Platner on the ballot until a July 27 deadline.
The announcement marks a significant step in Shah’s political career, positioning him as a challenger in a race that could reshape Maine’s representation in the Senate.
