Dr. Chinmay Jani, an Indian American researcher, has been awarded the $50,000 Binaytara Lung Cancer Research Award for his innovative work in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Chinmay Jani, an early-career faculty member at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital, has been honored with the $50,000 Binaytara Lung Cancer Research Award. This recognition comes as a result of his participation in the live Impact Pitch competition at the 2026 Brooklyn Lung Cancer Conference, which took place from August 7 to 8.
The conference was organized by Binaytara, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing access to cancer care through research, education, and advocacy. Jani was selected as one of five finalists who presented their research proposals to an audience and a panel of four expert mentors, referred to as “Catalysts.” The panel evaluated each presentation based on five criteria: scientific merit, feasibility, potential clinical impact, clarity of presentation, and performance during the question-and-answer session.
In reflecting on his achievement, Jani stated, “This award reflects a truly collective effort: the clinical trial was initially conceived with guidance from my mentors, developed through the Sylvester Clinical Trial Workshop, and subsequently advanced through the SITC Clinical Trial Workshop.” He emphasized that the support from Binaytara will facilitate the transition of his collaborative vision into clinical implementation as he moves into a faculty role in Thoracic Oncology and Experimental Therapeutics at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Dennis C. Watson, Jani’s translational mentor and Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, highlighted the significance of Jani’s work. “Dr. Jani is launching a clinical trial aiming to leverage host-microbiome interaction for lung cancer therapy,” Watson noted. He added that the funding will be utilized for advanced translational assays that could potentially lead to the development of a new standard of care.
The Binaytara Research Awards are designed to provide emerging investigators with essential funding, national and international visibility, and direct mentorship from leaders in thoracic oncology. This initiative aims to foster the next generation of researchers in the field.
Tracing his roots back to India, Jani completed his foundational medical education at Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad. After relocating to the United States for post-graduate medical training, he completed his internal medicine residency and served as chief resident at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
Following his residency, Jani transitioned to the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he has focused his academic and clinical efforts on thoracic oncology research.
As the landscape of cancer research continues to evolve, Jani’s work stands out as a promising contribution to the understanding and treatment of lung cancer, underscoring the importance of innovative approaches in the fight against this disease.
The recognition of Dr. Jani’s research underscores the critical need for continued investment in cancer research and the potential for emerging scientists to make significant impacts in the field, according to American Bazaar.
