Communities across the U.S. celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural programs in cities like Washington, Chicago, Boston, and Seattle.

WASHINGTON, DC – Communities across the United States marked India’s 80th Independence Day with vibrant flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural programs in cities including Washington, Chicago, Boston, and Seattle.

At India House in Washington, Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra commended the Indian diaspora for its significant contributions to India’s development and the strengthening of India-U.S. relations.

Kwatra reflected on the past eight decades since India gained independence, describing this period as one of “success and achievement.” He emphasized that these accomplishments have positioned India on a path toward its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The celebrations featured the hoisting of the Indian Tricolor, cultural performances, and awards for winners of painting and quiz competitions. During the event, Kwatra also read President Droupadi Murmu’s address for Independence Day.

Children participated enthusiastically, showcasing their artistic talents through paintings that depicted Indian traditions, technology, and their visions for India in 2047. Ten-year-old Anvika Kajjam, whose family hails from Telangana, won first prize in her category for a painting illustrating a greener, technologically advanced India.

BOSTON – In Boston, the fifth International India Day Parade and Freedom Festival was organized by the Foundation of Indian Americans New England. For the first time, the Prudential Center was illuminated in the colors of the Indian flag.

The parade was inaugurated by Raghuram S., the Consul General of India in Boston. U.S. Navy representative Maggie Lemay and retired Indian Army Colonel Inderpreet Singh served as grand marshals for the event.

SEATTLE – In Seattle, the Consulate General of India released a special rendition of ‘Vande Mataram,’ performed by Grammy Award-winning violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan alongside students from the Swara Yoga Ensemble.

This performance was filmed at the Consulate, where the Tricolor was also hoisted atop the Federal Reserve Building in the presence of U.S. officials and leaders from the Indian-American community.

Last year, Seattle celebrated India’s Independence Day by raising the Tricolor atop the iconic Space Needle.

CHICAGO – In Schaumburg, the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago organized its second Triranga Car Rally, featuring nearly 50 decorated cars displaying both Indian and American flags.

The rally commenced with the national anthem and patriotic slogans. FIA-Chicago President Hemant Patel expressed gratitude to rally chair Sanjay Vora and all participants for their involvement.

Representatives from various Indian-American community organizations joined the event, which was followed by a flag-hoisting ceremony and an Independence Day Parade hosted by the National India Hub.

According to IANS, these celebrations across the U.S. reflect the strong ties between the Indian diaspora and their homeland, showcasing a shared commitment to cultural heritage and national pride.
