Dr. Vineet Chopra, an Indian American physician scientist, is set to step down from his position as chair of the Colorado University Anschutz School of Medicine on October 26. He will shift his focus entirely to his role as executive vice dean for clinical, quality, and research, a position he has held in an interim capacity since May 2025 while continuing to serve as department chair.

During his five-year tenure as chair, Dr. Chopra has significantly enhanced the department’s clinical enterprise, which now handles over one million patient visits annually. A university announcement highlighted the exceptional service he has provided, noting the department’s intense focus on quality and patient safety. This focus has been complemented by an increased reliance on data to inform clinical performance, salary equity, annual reviews, and promotion processes.

In a challenging funding environment for research, the department has experienced remarkable growth, rising from 23rd to 14th nationally in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among medical departments. In 2025 alone, the faculty secured approximately $162 million in research awards, including $89 million in federal support. Furthermore, the department’s investment in research and researchers has increased fivefold over the past five years.

The training programs within the department have also expanded significantly, now supporting around 192 residents and 200 fellows across a diverse array of training programs. School of Medicine Dean John Sampson commended Dr. Chopra’s accomplishments, stating, “Such accomplishments don’t happen by chance. It’s part of an investment in creating a culture that values mentorship and professional development.”

Dr. Chopra and his leadership team have fostered an environment that not only attracts top talent but also rewards achievement, according to Dean Sampson.

Dr. Chopra’s research primarily focuses on enhancing the safety of hospitalized patients and preventing hospital-acquired complications. He has conducted extensive studies on complications related to central venous catheters, particularly peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). He is the first author of the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC), a set of guidelines that assists healthcare professionals in making informed decisions regarding the appropriate use of intravenous devices. These criteria are utilized in hospitals across the United States and internationally.

Born in New Delhi, India, Dr. Chopra earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from Grant Medical College in Mumbai. He later obtained a Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan and completed his medical residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

With Dr. Chopra transitioning to his executive role full-time, Mark Earnest will serve as the interim chair of the Department of Medicine.
