This summer, Silicon Valley Shakespeare presents a Bollywood-inspired reimagining of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ as part of its repertory season, celebrating South Asian American culture.
This summer, Silicon Valley Shakespeare (SVS) will present a reimagined production of *Much Ado About Nothing*, transforming it into a vibrant South Asian American wedding celebration. Directed by Kunal Prasad in his directorial debut, the production will be staged outdoors at Sanborn County Park, alongside Oscar Wilde’s *The Importance of Being Earnest* as part of their repertory season.
This adaptation offers a rare regional staging of Shakespeare, reframed through a South Asian American cultural lens by one of the Bay Area’s leading organizations dedicated to amplifying Indian American stories.
*Much Ado About Nothing* reinterprets Shakespeare’s beloved comedy as a lively Bollywood-inspired wedding celebration, infused with music, dance, color, and family drama. The narrative unfolds as family, friends, and well-meaning meddlers collide in a whirlwind of festivities, misunderstandings, and playful deception, all while a South Asian American family prepares for a love marriage. At its core, the story celebrates love in its messy, exhilarating, and transformative forms, reminding audiences that laughter, loyalty, and courage are essential ingredients for every wedding, romance, and community gathering.
In addition to *Much Ado About Nothing*, SVS will also stage its first production of a work by Oscar Wilde, *The Importance of Being Earnest*, which promises razor-sharp wit, mistaken identities, and romantic mischief.
“At a time when many arts organizations are facing significant challenges, we’re proud to continue growing while remaining committed to making theatre accessible to everyone,” said Executive Director Annalisa Tkacheff. “These productions showcase the joy, connection, and sense of community that live theatre creates, and we’re excited to welcome audiences to experience them together.”
The repertory season will also feature a series of special events designed to enhance the audience experience. *Much Ado About Nothing* will include an AAPI Heritage Night on Sunday, August 9, highlighting businesses and organizations owned by or celebrating the AAPI community. Additionally, there will be a Desi Dress-Up Night with an onstage photo opportunity on Saturday, August 22, where guests are encouraged to wear traditional South Asian attire, including sarees, salwar kameezes, lehenga cholis, and kurtas.
During the run of *The Importance of Being Earnest*, audiences can enjoy an Oscar Wilde and Edwardian Dress-Up Night with an onstage photo opportunity on Sunday, August 2, as well as a Cookies & Tea Night in partnership with Chipidee Cookies on Sunday, August 16.
Artistic Director Angie Higgins emphasized that the season was intentionally built around comedy. “Many of us could use more opportunities to laugh and celebrate together right now,” Higgins said. “Both of these plays remind us that love, family, friendship, and community can be messy, but they’re also what make life meaningful. Audiences can expect two joyful productions filled with heart, humor, and unforgettable characters.”
SVS’ repertory season runs Thursdays through Sundays from July 31 through September 6. *Much Ado About Nothing* will be performed on select Thursdays through Sundays from August 7 to September 6 at Sanborn County Park in Saratoga, California. Tickets are priced between $32 and $64.
