Trump’s political influence is evident in the rightward shift of several Latin American countries, with Brazil poised to be the next significant test of this trend.

Former President Donald Trump’s political influence is extending beyond the United States, as a number of Latin American countries increasingly adopt right-leaning leadership. Brazil is now emerging as a critical test case for this shifting political landscape.

Marcelo Sandrin, an Argentine who has lived in the U.S. for approximately three decades, believes the trend is unmistakable and attributes much of it to Trump. Speaking to Fox News Digital outside the T. Ed Garrison Arena near Clemson, Sandrin highlighted Argentine President Javier Milei and the potential for Brazil to follow suit as evidence of Trump’s growing impact in the region.

“[Trump deserves] a lot of credit,” Sandrin stated, noting that Milei represents a strong libertarian and right-wing, small-government ideology. He emphasized that during Trump’s presidency, South America has increasingly leaned to the right.

In Argentina, Milei has emerged as one of Trump’s most notable ideological allies in the hemisphere. He is pursuing sweeping economic reforms and challenging the left-wing political establishment that has dominated much of Argentina’s recent history.

As for Brazil, Sandrin anticipates a potential return to right-wing leadership, suggesting that the political landscape is shifting. “It’s only Mexico and Uruguay for now [on the left],” he remarked, adding that the primary concern in his country is the need for political integrity. “They have to stop stealing. That’s the number one thing.”

Brazil’s political future remains uncertain, highlighting the complexities of labeling Latin America’s political trajectory as uniformly rightward. Allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro are seeking to reclaim power, but the political contestation suggests a more nuanced situation.

The Trump administration’s influence in the region has also transcended electoral politics. Following the U.S. capture of Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolás Maduro, there has been a significant shift in Venezuela’s political landscape. Santiago Vidal Calvo, a researcher at the Manhattan Institute and a Venezuelan native, argued that this operation reinforced U.S. influence across Latin America while undermining Maduro’s political order.

“I have no doubt that President Trump has had a good influential policy towards making governments more right-leaning in Latin America,” Calvo asserted. He noted that the capture of Maduro further emphasized the United States as a significant force in the continent, particularly as China has been increasingly sidelined in various fronts.

Calvo also pointed out that Trump, alongside leaders like Milei and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, has inspired right-leaning movements across the region. The implications of this shift extend beyond elections, affecting immigration, trade, Chinese influence, and national security.

However, the regional shift is not uniform. Mexico continues to be governed by the left-wing Morena movement, serving as a political counterpoint to Trump’s network of right-leaning allies. Uruguay also remains on the left, further complicating the narrative of a sweeping conservative wave.

Calvo praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio, arguing that the administration’s approach to Latin America has been an underappreciated aspect of its foreign policy achievements. “I think one of the highlights of this Trump administration has been a good example of foreign policy in Latin America, especially at the hand of [Marco] Rubio,” he stated.

The evolving political dynamics in Latin America, influenced by Trump’s presidency, will continue to be closely monitored, particularly as Brazil prepares for its next electoral challenges. The outcomes in these countries may significantly shape the region’s political landscape in the years to come.

According to Fox News Digital, the implications of these shifts are profound, affecting not only political alignments but also economic policies and international relations.
