Russia launched missile strikes on Kyiv shortly after U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited the city to discuss peace negotiations.

Russia intensified its military actions against Ukraine on Tuesday, launching ballistic and cruise missiles at Kyiv shortly after U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner concluded their visit to the capital. This visit was part of an effort to revive stalled peace negotiations between the two nations.

Ukrainian officials reported that the missile strikes targeted residential areas in two districts of Kyiv, causing significant damage to buildings and prompting authorities to urge residents to remain indoors for safety. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that some individuals were trapped inside a residential building following the attacks.

The missile strikes resulted in fires across the city, including damage to an educational facility. These attacks came on the heels of Witkoff and Kushner’s meetings with Ukrainian officials on Sunday, as well as their discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day. The Trump administration is actively seeking to bring an end to the conflict that has persisted since February 2022.

Witkoff indicated that prior to their visit, Ukraine and Russia had tentatively agreed to a three-day ceasefire, which ultimately ended on Tuesday. This ceasefire was a rare moment of potential progress amid months of stagnation in peace talks.

In a post on X, Witkoff noted, “Substantive progress was made, including movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks. President Trump is working hard to stop the killing and work towards a lasting and durable peace.”

On the same day as the missile strikes, the governor of Saratov, a Russian city, reported that a Ukrainian drone had attacked civilian infrastructure, resulting in injuries to several individuals. This incident underscores the ongoing volatility of the conflict, as both sides continue to engage in military actions.

Ukrainian officials reported that recent Russian attacks have resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries across the country. The situation remains dire, with the conflict showing no signs of abating.

Additionally, Ukrainian drones targeted three Russian oil refineries on Monday, further escalating the ongoing hostilities. As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

As the conflict continues to unfold, the efforts of U.S. diplomats like Witkoff and Kushner highlight the complexities of achieving peace in a region marked by deep-seated tensions and ongoing violence, according to CNN.
