The Scripps National Spelling Bee returns on May 26, featuring 247 spellers from across the globe, with Indian American competitors expected to dominate once again.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is set to commence on May 26, showcasing 247 spellers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. territories, and five additional countries. This prestigious event will unfold over several days, with preliminary rounds on May 26, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals on May 27, and culminating in the finals on May 28. The winner will earn the unofficial title of the top speller in the English language, along with a trophy and over $52,000 in cash and prizes. Competitors range in age from 9 to 15 and can participate until the eighth grade.
Indian American spellers have had a remarkable track record in the bee, winning 30 of the last 36 competitions. Faizan Zaki from Plano, Texas, who claimed victory in last year’s competition, will return in a ceremonial capacity, as past champions are not eligible to compete again. Notably, Sarvadnya Kadam, last year’s runner-up from Visalia, California, has aged out of the competition. However, third-place finisher Sarv Dharavane from Dunwoody, Georgia, is back and is considered one of the favorites this year.
This year’s bee will take place at a new venue, Constitution Hall in downtown Washington, D.C., after being held for over a decade at a convention center in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Mina Kimes, an NFL analyst for ESPN and recent champion of “Celebrity Jeopardy!,” will host the event, marking the first time since LeVar Burton in 2022 that a celebrity has taken on this role.
For those interested in watching the competition, the preliminary rounds will be broadcast on Scripps Sports Network from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 26. The quarterfinals will air on Scripps Sports from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 27, while the semifinals will be available live on Scripps Sports from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on tape-delay on ION from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The finals will be aired on ION on May 28 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Additionally, the preliminary, quarterfinal, and semifinal rounds will be streamed on spellingbee.com.
As the competition approaches, anticipation builds around whether a Desi speller will once again take home the coveted trophy, continuing a legacy of excellence in this beloved event.
According to India Currents, the Scripps National Spelling Bee remains a platform for showcasing linguistic talent and cultural diversity.
