Roblox Introduces AI Tools for Enhanced Child Safety Online

Roblox is enhancing child safety by sharing AI tools designed to detect online grooming and inappropriate behavior, aiming to improve protections across various platforms.

Roblox, the popular online gaming platform, is taking significant steps to enhance child safety by sharing its artificial intelligence (AI) safety models with other platforms. These models are designed to detect online grooming, requests for personal information, and violations in voice chat.

As of the second quarter of 2026, Roblox reported an impressive average of 123 million daily active users, with nearly three-quarters of its age-verified users being under 18. This vast reach underscores the importance of vigilance when it comes to online interactions. Conversations that may seem harmless can quickly escalate into dangerous situations, particularly when they involve requests for personal information or a shift to less monitored communication platforms.

Earlier this year, a troubling case involving two young girls highlighted the risks associated with online interactions. Investigators revealed that a Nebraska man had initially contacted the girls through Roblox before the conversation shifted to Snapchat, ultimately leading to allegations of online grooming. In response to such incidents, Roblox is now making its AI technology available to help identify and prevent similar situations.

On August 19, Roblox announced its contribution of updated versions of three safety models to the Robust Open Online Safety Tools (ROOST) Model Community. The company is also releasing a new evaluation dataset, allowing other platforms to test their own safety systems. While the technical details may be complex, the primary focus of these tools is straightforward: to identify attempts to solicit personal information, detect signs of potential child endangerment, and monitor inappropriate behavior in voice chat.

Roblox has already implemented these AI systems on its platform, and by sharing them with other companies, it hopes to enhance overall online safety. As a founding member of ROOST, alongside tech giants like Google and OpenAI, Roblox is committed to making open-source online safety technology accessible to organizations that may lack the resources to develop sophisticated systems on their own.

Given the myriad ways children communicate online today, a conversation can easily transition from a game to a messaging app or social platform, each with varying levels of protection. By sharing safety technology, Roblox aims to equip more services with tools that can identify similar warning signs. However, it is essential for parents to remain vigilant and not lower their guard simply because new technologies are being introduced.

One of the most notable updates for families is Roblox’s Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Classifier. This tool identifies attempts to solicit personal information, such as phone numbers or social media usernames, and detects efforts to redirect conversations to other platforms. This is particularly crucial, as individuals with malicious intent may seek to move discussions away from the safety of the original platform.

Roblox’s updated PII Classifier, now in Version 2.0, has significantly improved its capabilities. Unlike older filters that focused on specific words or patterns, this version analyzes the context of conversations, allowing it to identify attempts to circumvent moderation through misspellings or coded language. The classifier has expanded its language support from 17 to 189 languages, and its accuracy has improved dramatically, as evidenced by its F1 score rising from 63.41 to 90.52.

Roblox’s Sentinel system addresses the gradual nature of online grooming, where trust is built over time before conversations become overtly inappropriate. Sentinel analyzes patterns across conversations to identify early signals of potential child endangerment, allowing human reviewers to prioritize suspicious interactions before they escalate. According to Roblox, nearly 70% of the child-endangerment cases detected in the past year were identified through Sentinel’s early detection capabilities.

In addition to text-based interactions, Roblox is also focusing on voice chat safety. The voice safety classifier analyzes speech in real time for policy violations. When a violation is detected, Roblox can issue a warning to users, and repeated offenses may result in temporary suspensions from voice chat. Since its initial release in 2024, the voice safety classifier has been downloaded over 72,000 times and now covers 30 languages and eight violation categories.

Despite these advancements, independent research has highlighted gaps in Roblox’s chat moderation, revealing instances of harmful messages that have evaded existing safeguards. A study analyzing over 2 million chat messages found examples of grooming, bullying, and other inappropriate content that slipped through moderation filters. This underscores the importance of not solely relying on automated systems for safety.

Roblox’s initiative to share its safety technology is a step toward improving protections across various platforms, particularly for smaller companies that may lack the resources to develop their own systems. Open-source tools can provide a foundation for these organizations, allowing them to adapt and enhance their safety measures based on collaborative feedback.

In addition to these technological advancements, Roblox has also expanded its age-based protections for younger users. These controls vary based on age groups, placing different limits on chat and game features to better safeguard children. Parents are encouraged to review these settings with their children to ensure they align with their family’s safety expectations.

As AI tools work behind the scenes, parents can take proactive steps to enhance their children’s online safety. It is crucial to have open conversations about online interactions, emphasizing the importance of reporting any uncomfortable situations. Children should be reminded to be cautious about sharing personal information and to recognize that individuals they meet online are still strangers.

Roblox allows users to report inappropriate behavior and block accounts directly within the platform. Parents can access communication controls through linked parental settings, and it is advisable to familiarize children with these features before any issues arise.

Ultimately, while AI safety systems are a valuable addition to online protection, they are not foolproof. Roblox acknowledges that no safety system is perfect, and parents should remain engaged in their children’s online activities. Encouraging open dialogue about online experiences can help children feel comfortable discussing any concerns they may have.

As technology continues to evolve, the collaboration between platforms to share safety tools represents a promising development in the ongoing effort to protect children online. However, parents must remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their children’s online experiences, ensuring they understand the potential risks and how to navigate them safely.
