The announcement came just a day before Robertson’s 27th birthday, solidifying his status as one of the NHL’s premier offensive talents for another season.
Entering the offseason as a restricted free agent, Robertson was initially extended a qualifying offer of $9.3 million by the Stars. However, both parties reached a more favorable agreement before the arbitration process commenced, ending weeks of uncertainty and allowing the six-year NHL veteran to concentrate on the upcoming season with Dallas.
General manager Jim Nill expressed enthusiasm about the contract, stating, “Jason has been a cornerstone of our franchise since he was drafted in 2017. A dynamic and skilled player, he has been one of the league’s top offensive threats since making his NHL debut. The agreement follows reports that Robertson turned down an eight-year sign-and-trade proposal from the Seattle Kraken, which would have paid him $15 million annually. Nill had previously confirmed that a trade framework was in place involving Seattle and the seventh overall draft pick, but Robertson opted not to commit to a long-term contract with the Kraken. If he does not sign another extension, the 27-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent before the start of the 2027-28 season.
Robertson has established himself as a key figure for the Dallas Stars, having been selected 39th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. His development into the team’s primary scorer is attributed to his sharp hockey sense, precise finishing, and ability to create opportunities for his teammates. Over the course of 456 regular-season games, Robertson has recorded 213 goals, 277 assists, and a total of 490 points, including a career-high 109-point season in 2022-23.
