Sam Lyne has received a late call-up to the Great Britain men’s national ice hockey team for the 2026 World Championship, stepping in for the injured Sean Norris.

Sam Lyne has been named to the Great Britain men’s national ice hockey team for the upcoming 2026 World Championship, following an injury to Sean Norris. This late addition comes as Great Britain prepares for a challenging Group A campaign against formidable opponents, including the USA, Finland, and Germany.

The 21-year-old forward was initially set to miss the tournament due to availability issues, as his North American team, the Cranbrook Bucks, had not qualified for the playoffs. However, their season concluded in the Conference Finals, allowing Lyne to join the national squad.

Lyne steps in for Norris, who sustained an injury during a match against Italy on April 30 in Milton Keynes. Head Coach Pete Russell expressed his enthusiasm about Lyne’s inclusion, stating, “This is a fantastic opportunity for Sam, and it’s great he can come back into the squad. He’s a talented young player, and we are thrilled he can join us for the World Championship.”

The Great Britain squad for the 2026 World Championship features a mix of experienced players and emerging talent. The team will rely on the skills of netminders Ben Bowns, Mat Robson, and Jackson Whistle, along with a strong defensive lineup that includes Travis Brown and Mark Richardson.

In addition to Lyne, the forward roster includes notable players such as Liam Kirk, Robert Dowd, and Brett Perlini, all of whom will be crucial as Great Britain faces off against some of the best teams in the world.

Great Britain’s Group A schedule is as follows:

On May 16, they will face Austria, followed by a match against the USA on May 17. The team will then take on Hungary on May 19, Switzerland on May 21, and Finland on May 22. Their final group stage matches will include a game against Latvia on May 24 and Germany on May 25.

Meanwhile, Group B will be contested at the BCF Arena in Fribourg, featuring a competitive lineup of eight nations, including Canada, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

As the tournament approaches, the Great Britain team is gearing up for what promises to be one of their toughest international tests yet. The inclusion of Sam Lyne adds a fresh dynamic to the squad, and fans will be eager to see how the team performs against the ice hockey heavyweights.

According to Team GB Ice Hockey, the squad is ready to make a strong showing in the championship.
