Sunder the Beautiful Elephant, a children’s picture book by Seema Vaid, tells the inspiring true story of a baby elephant’s journey from captivity to freedom.
Sunder the Beautiful Elephant is a children’s picture book authored by Seema Vaid, inspired by the true story of Sunder, a baby elephant born in the jungles of Assam, India. Aimed at children aged 5 to 9, the book emphasizes the importance of kindness toward animals, the power of collective compassion, and the belief that every voice—no matter how small—can make a difference.
Vaid’s journey to writing this book began over a decade ago on a sunny Sunday morning. While browsing through a local newspaper with her 5-year-old son, she came across an article detailing how famous musician Sir Paul McCartney had joined the campaign for the freedom of a temple elephant named Sunder in India. The accompanying image of Sunder, bound in thick chains, deeply upset her son, who began asking questions about the baby elephant’s suffering. Vaid found herself without answers.
Having grown up in North India, Vaid had never encountered an elephant in a temple, a practice more common in South India. As a Hindu raised to worship Ganesha, she was shocked by the treatment of these majestic creatures, which she viewed as living embodiments of the deity. This realization ignited a sense of urgency within her to advocate for the compassionate treatment of elephants.
The documentary “Gods in Shackles” by Sangita Iyer further solidified Vaid’s resolve to take action. She felt compelled to ensure that these living representations of Ganesha received the respect and compassion they deserved.
In collaboration with her son, Vaid launched a petition for Sunder’s freedom, gathering signatures and utilizing social media to connect with others involved in the Free Sunder campaign. Their efforts were met with encouragement as they discovered a growing community of advocates, including animal rights organizations that filed a case in the Maharashtra High Court. The court ruled in favor of Sunder’s release to a sanctuary, but his owner appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. Ultimately, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s ruling, allowing Sunder to be transferred to Bannerghatta National Park in Bengaluru.
Vaid recalls the emotional moment when she watched a live video of Sunder stepping into the truck that would take him to his new life—one free from pain and fear. This pivotal moment inspired her to share Sunder’s story of hope and compassion with the world.
Motivated by her experiences, Vaid became an animal rights advocate, aiming to raise awareness about making mindful choices that promote cruelty-free and sustainable living. In 2023, she co-founded the non-profit organization A Compassionate World (ACW) alongside Shivakshi Gupta and Suchitra Thapliyal. Their mission is to educate the public on healthier, kinder, and sustainable choices while supporting animal welfare and empowering artisans facing socio-economic challenges.
Vaid began writing Sunder’s story in fragments, but the urgency to complete and publish the book intensified as ACW prepared to launch its Elephant Freedom Campaign, From Chains to Change, in 2026. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the plight of captive elephants and inspire action for their freedom. Sunder’s story is a crucial part of this initiative, fostering compassion in young readers. The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, and Vaid looks forward to the impact this story will have on future generations.
Vaid credits her son as the catalyst for her belief that every child possesses innate compassion. His concern for Sunder prompted her to take action. As president of A Compassionate World, she encourages everyone to make choices that do not cause harm, whether in the food they consume, the clothing they wear, or the products they purchase.
For those interested in exploring Sunder’s story further, Sunder the Beautiful Elephant is set to be published on May 29, 2026, and is available for pre-order.
According to India Currents, this book serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and advocacy for animals.
