Counterterrorism police are currently investigating the suspects, who were detained on Sunday in Gloucestershire. Initially held on suspicion of offenses under Britain’s Explosives Act, they were later arrested on terrorism charges related to the airfield, which serves as the primary European base for American strategic bombers.
On Sunday, former President Donald Trump stated that U.S. authorities had been monitoring the suspects prior to their capture. “We had them under investigation,” Trump told reporters in Chicago. “They were looking to do big damage to our fort.” He added that the investigation involved collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, although he was uncertain if Scotland Yard was directly involved.
According to Sky News, counterterrorism police are exploring potential links between the suspects and Iran in connection with the alleged bomb plot. Morgan Murphy, a former Trump White House official, emphasized that British authorities are leading the investigation in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies. “Every phone, bank record, and rental receipt will be run through British and American intelligence, and if the trail leads to Tehran, it will be found,” Murphy stated.
Murphy also noted that if conclusive evidence emerges linking Iran to the attempted attack on U.S. forces, the decision on how to respond would ultimately rest with the American President.
Former Defense Intelligence Agency official Andrew Badger highlighted the complexity of the situation, pointing out that the number of suspects and vehicles involved suggests a sophisticated operation. “We are going to see elevated security protocols across Europe, across the U.K., and across the entire world for any U.S. installation,” he said. “This is a very significant threat, and again, seeing that we had five individuals involved and three different reported vans at the scene, this could have been a very complex, highly orchestrated operation.”
Badger stressed that this incident is not indicative of an amateur lone-wolf operation, given Fairford’s strategic importance to the U.S. military. “Fairford is also where the U.S. houses its strategic bombers for Europe as well as the rest of the world,” he explained. He warned that a potential attack could have broader implications beyond the airfield itself, potentially causing significant damage to the surrounding area.
He elaborated on the nature of the potential attack, suggesting that the suspects might have intended to use a vehicle-borne explosive device (VBIED). “They could have tried to use a VBIED or a vehicle-borne explosive device where the first van could have gone off at the front gate, and then the other vans would have gone in and tried to go for the strategic bombers,” Badger noted.
While British authorities have not publicly identified any specific individuals or motives behind the suspected plot, RAF Fairford has gained increased strategic importance amid ongoing tensions with Iran. The U.K. government has previously authorized U.S. forces to utilize Royal Air Force bases, including Fairford and Diego Garcia, for limited defensive operations against Iranian threats.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has issued warnings that any base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target. “Any base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory is a legitimate target for our forces,” the IRGC stated, according to reports. Morgan Murphy pointed out that Tehran had warned London in July to keep American bombers away from Fairford, asserting that if this plot is traced back to Iran, the response should involve increasing, not decreasing, the number of bombers stationed there.
A local councilor informed Reuters that there had been a recent security alert at Fairford, leading to heightened surveillance in the area. “So there was a specific threat about six weeks ago from the Iranians on this base. At the time, there was increased surveillance around the area,” he said.
However, Badger cautioned against jumping to conclusions regarding Iran’s involvement, suggesting that other threats could also be at play. “This could be Iran trying to gain strategic leverage in negotiations, but there are other actors as well,” he said, mentioning the potential for Russian involvement in hybrid warfare attacks across Europe, as well as the ongoing threat posed by Islamic extremists in the U.K.
He speculated that the incident could represent a form of retaliation by Iran aimed at gaining leverage or inflicting costs due to the U.S. withdrawal from negotiations. Additionally, Badger pointed to RAF Welford, a significant U.S. ammunition storage facility that supports operations at RAF Fairford, as a possible target.
“RAF Welford is actually the second-largest weapons and ammunition depot in all of Europe,” he noted, emphasizing the potential risks associated with the facility. “Other bases across Europe, including European and U.S. partners, have already been on a heightened state of alert,” he added. Following this incident, he anticipates an even more elevated state of security across U.S. installations.
Reports indicate that RAF Fairford has been placed on what’s known as Delta alert, the highest state of security alert within the military base system, signaling that an imminent terrorist attack is possible.
