Residents in Southaven, Mississippi, are raising concerns over persistent noise from a power plant supporting Elon Musk’s AI data centers, disrupting their sleep and daily lives despite mitigation efforts.

Residents in Southaven, Mississippi, are voicing their frustrations regarding a power plant that supplies electricity to Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI data centers. They claim that the facility has generated continuous noise, significantly disrupting their sleep and impacting their daily routines.

Located near the Memphis region, the power plant has become a focal point of opposition as Musk’s AI infrastructure continues to expand in the area. According to CBS News, SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI, has committed millions of dollars to implement sound walls and silencers utilizing advanced noise-reduction technology. However, local residents argue that the sound wall installed at the facility has offered little relief from the disturbances.

The growing discontent has led to a federal lawsuit filed by Southaven residents, including Jason Haley and Taylor Logsdon, against xAI and its subsidiary, MZX Tech. Haley, a long-time resident of Southaven, has expressed that the noise from the plant often wakes him at night, describing it as akin to an airplane hovering over his home.

Logsdon, who lives in the area with her family, has reported that the noise has resulted in migraines, anxiety, and persistent ringing in her ears. She noted that her children have also experienced similar symptoms, including difficulty sleeping.

The lawsuit, initiated in June, claims that residents have been subjected to near-constant noise and vibrations emanating from the power plant. Haley, Logsdon, and another resident are seeking damages and other forms of relief.

The power plant is integral to SpaceXAI’s rapidly growing data center operations in the Memphis and Southaven areas. Musk’s Colossus data center commenced operations in the region in 2024, followed by further expansions that include Colossus 2 and additional projects.

According to CBS News, SpaceXAI’s investments in Southaven are projected to exceed $20 billion, with Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves labeling it the largest economic development project in the state’s history. The company has utilized natural gas turbines at the Southaven facility to generate electricity for its data centers. However, residents argue that this rapid development has come at a significant cost to their quality of life.

Haley has previously documented noise levels exceeding 60 decibels from his backyard during late-night hours. The World Health Organization recommends that nighttime noise levels remain below 40 decibels outside bedrooms to prevent adverse health effects.

In response to the complaints, SpaceXAI has implemented various measures aimed at noise reduction, including the installation of a sound wall, berms, and trees. Nevertheless, Logsdon has indicated that these efforts have had minimal impact on the noise levels.

In July, the company announced its commitment to invest millions in additional sound walls and silencers around the plant. However, residents continue to express dissatisfaction with the ongoing noise issues, leading the Safe and Sound Coalition—a resident-led group opposing the plant’s effects—to gather over 1,400 signatures on a petition demanding the power plant’s closure.

The dispute extends beyond noise complaints. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) filed a lawsuit against xAI and MZX Tech in April, alleging that the plant emits significant amounts of harmful pollutants. This case revolves around the facility’s gas turbines and its environmental permitting process.

In a twist, the Justice Department has sought to intervene and dismiss the NAACP’s case, citing national security concerns and Mississippi’s permitting decisions. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has stated that MZX Tech was required to demonstrate compliance with air-quality standards during the permitting process. The agency has also reached an agreement with MZX Tech to replace 69 temporary turbines with 41 permanent ones over the course of a year.

The residents’ lawsuit adds another layer of legal challenges to Musk’s AI infrastructure operations in Mississippi. Reuters reported that the class-action complaint alleges the power plant creates a public nuisance through its constant noise, negatively impacting residents’ health and property values. This lawsuit potentially represents over 10,000 affected individuals, although Musk is not personally named as a defendant.

This ongoing dispute highlights a broader challenge faced by large AI data center projects: balancing the rapid expansion of computing infrastructure with the concerns of nearby communities. For residents of Southaven, the issue is pressing. Haley has stated that the noise disrupts his sleep, while Logsdon has expressed a desire for her family to regain a normal sleeping pattern and enjoy their home once again.

As SpaceXAI continues to expand its data center presence in the Memphis region, the divide between residents and the company remains evident, with ongoing debates over the adequacy of the measures taken to address the noise concerns.

According to CBS News, the situation in Southaven underscores the complexities of integrating large-scale technological developments into existing communities.
