Chirag Veer Singh Sarao has made history as the first Sikh American to join the United States Air Force Academy, marking a significant milestone for the Sikh community in the U.S.
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO—Chirag Veer Singh Sarao has become the first Sikh American to join the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), as confirmed by the American Sikh Council (ASC).
Sarao received religious accommodation on June 20, allowing him to serve while upholding his articles of faith and Sikh identity. He officially joined the academy on June 24, a day known as I-Day, and is currently undergoing six weeks of boot camp.
His admission to the USAFA is a testament to his strong academic record. In addition to his academic achievements, Sarao is an Eagle Scout and holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo, showcasing his commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom.
Before choosing the USAFA, Sarao was awarded full scholarships from both the Air Force ROTC and Naval ROTC programs. He also received acceptance offers from prestigious institutions such as the University of Southern California and the University of Washington.
Kavneet Singh, a representative of the ASC, played a pivotal role in mentoring Sarao throughout his high school years, helping him prepare for admission to the military academy. Singh serves as an honorary recruiter for the USAFA, further emphasizing the support available to aspiring Sikh American cadets.
The USAFA offers a comprehensive four-year program that combines undergraduate studies with military training. The curriculum emphasizes leadership, discipline, and character development, preparing cadets to serve as officers in the U.S. Air Force.
In addition to supporting individual cadets, the ASC has partnered with the U.S. Air Force to establish a flying scholarship program aimed at Sikh American high school students. Launched in 2022, this initiative selects one or two students aged 16 to 18 each year for a three-week summer program.
The scholarship, valued at $12,500, provides participants with leadership training and 15 hours of actual flying experience, further encouraging young Sikhs to pursue careers in aviation and military service.
Chirag Veer Singh Sarao’s journey to the USAFA not only represents a personal achievement but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of Sikh Americans. His commitment to his faith and country exemplifies the values of dedication and perseverance.
According to the American Sikh Council, Sarao’s accomplishment is a significant step forward for representation within the military and highlights the growing diversity in the U.S. armed forces.
