Two American tourists were arrested in Japan after one allegedly trespassed into the enclosure of Punch, a viral monkey star, at Ichikawa City Zoo.

Two American nationals were arrested at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan on Sunday after one allegedly entered the enclosure of Punch, a young macaque known for his close bond with a stuffed orangutan toy.

According to reports, videos circulating online show an individual dressed in an emoji costume climbing over a barrier into the macaque enclosure. The person reportedly dropped a small stuffed toy near the animals, which startled them and caused them to retreat, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The suspects have been identified as a 24-year-old college student and a 27-year-old self-described singer. Zoo staff quickly intervened, and authorities confirmed that neither suspect made physical contact with the monkeys.

Ichikawa Police stated that the two men were arrested on suspicion of forcible obstruction of business. Reports indicate that one suspect was uncooperative with police, while the other denied the allegations, as cited by NHK.

In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ichikawa City Zoo confirmed that the pair had been handed over to police and that safety inspections were conducted following the incident. The zoo emphasized that no animals were injured during the event.

“Around 10:50 today, there was an intruder in Saruyama,” the zoo wrote in its statement. “We are informing you that the two individuals, including the intruder in question, have been handed over to the police.”

In response to the incident, the zoo announced temporary closures of certain viewing areas and implemented enhanced security measures while continuing normal operations.

Punch, the macaque at the center of the incident, was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth in July 2025, leading zookeepers to hand-raise him. His unique story and charming personality have made him a viral sensation on social media.

As the investigation continues, the zoo remains focused on ensuring the safety of its animals and visitors. The incident has raised concerns about the security of animal enclosures and the responsibilities of visitors at zoos.

According to Agence France-Presse, the situation highlights the need for increased awareness and respect for wildlife and their habitats.
