Fatalities and injuries have been confirmed following a significant fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, prompting responses from military and emergency services.

Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty has confirmed that there have been fatalities and injuries resulting from a serious incident that ignited a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday.

McGuinty, addressing reporters, did not specify the number of casualties but expressed his sorrow over the situation. “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” he stated.

As of Saturday evening, the fire was still active, with McGuinty noting, “I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory.” The fire reportedly spread beyond the military base’s perimeter into the surrounding area, although local officials indicated that no evacuation orders had been issued.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took to social media platform X to address the incident, stating, “A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also commented on the situation, describing it as a “significant and tragic fire” impacting military personnel stationed at the base.

In response to the incident, the Canadian Armed Forces, along with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and local emergency services, have mobilized to provide assistance. McGuinty emphasized the collaboration between various governmental bodies, saying, “The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, partners across the federal government, including public safety, are working with the government of Alberta and municipal governments to mobilize all necessary support.”

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located approximately 130 miles east of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s busiest military installations. In 2021, it was reported to have around 1,310 military and civilian personnel stationed there. The nearby town of Wainwright has a population of approximately 6,600 residents.

The cause of the fire remains unclear as investigations are ongoing. Authorities continue to assess the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

According to Reuters, the incident has drawn significant attention due to its severity and the involvement of multiple emergency response teams.
