New research from the UK Biobank indicates that low wine consumption is associated with lower mortality rates compared to beer and spirits, while heavy drinking significantly increases death risk.
Heavy alcohol consumption has long been associated with increased mortality risk, but a recent study suggests that the type of beverage consumed at lower levels may also play a significant role. Research involving 340,924 participants from the UK Biobank has revealed that wine is linked to lower mortality rates, while beer and spirits are associated with higher death risks.
The data for this study was collected between 2006 and 2022, with participants undergoing an average follow-up period of more than 13 years. The findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session held in New Orleans.
In the study, participants categorized their alcohol intake as never/occasional, low, moderate, or high. High consumption was defined as exceeding 40 grams of alcohol per day for men (approximately three standard drinks) and more than 20 grams per day for women (about 1.4 standard drinks). Those who reported high levels of alcohol consumption faced a 24% higher risk of all-cause mortality, a 36% increased risk of cancer-related death, and a 14% higher risk of cardiovascular death compared to individuals who never or occasionally drank.
However, the study found that the mortality risk associated with low or moderate alcohol consumption varied depending on the type of beverage consumed. Spirits, beer, and cider were linked to significantly higher mortality rates, while moderate wine consumption was associated with a notable reduction in mortality risk. Specifically, moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death compared to those who abstained or drank infrequently.
Conversely, individuals who consumed low amounts of spirits, beer, or cider exhibited a 9% higher risk of cardiovascular death. Dr. Zhangling Chen, a professor at the Second Xiangya Hospital at Central South University in China and the study’s senior author, emphasized the importance of these findings. “These results come from the general population, and in certain high-risk groups, such as people with chronic diseases or cardiovascular conditions, the risks could be even higher,” he stated in a press release.
Dr. Chen noted that these findings could help refine public health guidance, highlighting that the health risks associated with alcohol consumption depend not only on the quantity consumed but also on the type of beverage.
One possible explanation for wine’s association with lower mortality rates could be its content of beneficial compounds such as polyphenols and antioxidants. These substances may positively impact blood vessel health, inflammation, and overall cardiovascular well-being.
Jessica Steinman, a Los Angeles-based addiction specialist and chief clinical officer for No Matter What Recovery, acknowledged the study’s insights but cautioned against applying the findings too broadly, particularly for individuals with a history of substance misuse. “When we hear these stories or get this research, it becomes a ‘black and white’ larger generalization for the population, and we want to be careful with that,” she told Fox News Digital.
Steinman emphasized that not everyone should consume alcohol daily, regardless of the type. “If there’s someone who’s struggling with substances, then they really shouldn’t be having it at all,” she advised. She pointed out that different alcoholic beverages contain varying levels of alcohol, and individual metabolism of alcohol can differ significantly.
Steinman recommended consulting with a medical professional for personalized guidance regarding alcohol consumption. “Overall, more is not better, but also the higher potency of alcohol and higher percentages of alcohol is going to affect people negatively as well,” she added.
The researchers acknowledged several limitations in their study. As it was observational in nature, the research could not definitively establish that wine consumption leads to lower mortality rates or that other alcoholic beverages directly cause higher mortality. Additionally, participants reported their baseline alcohol intake at the study’s outset, meaning any changes in drinking habits during the follow-up period were not captured.
Furthermore, the researchers noted that wine drinkers might have different dietary or lifestyle habits that could influence their health outcomes. The UK Biobank participants are generally healthier than the overall population, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
The authors of the study called for high-quality randomized trials to further investigate the relationship between drinking habits and mortality risk.
These findings underscore the complexity of alcohol consumption and its health implications, suggesting that moderation and beverage choice are critical factors in determining the associated risks.
