Research indicates that lower sugar intake during pregnancy and early childhood may significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia later in life.

A recent study involving approximately 64,000 individuals suggests that reduced sugar consumption during pregnancy and the early years of life could be linked to a decreased risk of dementia decades later.

Published in the journal Neurology, the research indicates that individuals who experienced lower sugar intake before birth and during their first one to two years of life had up to a 23% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those born after the reintroduction of sugar following World War II rationing.

The study analyzed health records of participants born in the United Kingdom before and after the end of sugar rationing in 1953. Findings revealed that those who had limited sugar intake before birth and during their first year of life faced a 21% lower risk of dementia. Furthermore, those whose sugar consumption remained restricted until age two exhibited a 23% lower risk.

In addition to the reduced risk, the study found that individuals with lower sugar exposure in early life developed dementia an average of 2.6 years later than their counterparts who consumed more sugar.

“Our findings suggest that limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health,” said Jiazhen Zheng, a study author from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in a press release.

Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University and not involved in the study, acknowledged the research’s intriguing premise but urged caution in interpreting the results. “I’m impressed with the researchers’ creativity, pulling together information across decades to look at this question, but the findings are not convincing,” Mozaffarian stated.

He pointed out that numerous other factors likely differed between individuals born during and after wartime, including overall nutrition and calorie intake, complicating the ability to attribute the differences solely to sugar consumption.

Despite the study’s limitations, Mozaffarian emphasized that the general guidance for pregnant women remains unchanged. “Ultimately, we know from other research that women who are pregnant should consume the healthiest foods possible for both their own health and that of their baby,” he advised.

He recommended focusing on minimally processed foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fermented dairy products, and fish, while limiting ultra-processed foods high in sugar, starch, and salt.

Researchers underscored that the study only identified an association between early-life sugar intake and dementia risk, rather than establishing a direct causal relationship. They also acknowledged several limitations, including the use of historical rationing policies as a proxy for individual sugar intake, which may not account for other differences between the groups studied.

As a result, the findings should be interpreted with caution, and further research is necessary to explore the potential impact of early dietary habits on long-term brain health.
