A woman’s unusual reaction to wine led to a life-changing diagnosis of Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma, highlighting the importance of recognizing alarming health symptoms.

A new mother from the U.K. experienced an unexpected and alarming reaction to wine that ultimately led to a significant health discovery. Hollie Thursby, 28, began noticing unusual symptoms after the birth of her second son, Jack.

During a routine checkup for her infant, Thursby mentioned to her doctor that she was suffering from “unbearably itchy skin,” a condition often associated with postpartum changes. The physician suggested that her symptoms were likely due to hormonal fluctuations following childbirth.

Despite her limited alcohol consumption, Thursby reported experiencing severe pain along the side of her neck. “It was really quite painful and uncomfortable,” she recalled. Alongside this discomfort, she felt an overwhelming fatigue, which she attributed to the demands of caring for her young children.

Thursby also described a sensation akin to someone sitting on her chest when she lay down at night, which added to her growing concerns about her health.

In July 2025, she discovered a lump on the side of her neck that she described as “really quite big.” Although the lump was not painful, it was hard and immobile. “When I turned my neck to the side, you could see it,” she stated.

Following further medical evaluation, Thursby received a shocking diagnosis: Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system and indicates the presence of cancer in two or more lymph nodes, according to Cancer Research U.K.

Common symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, heavy sweating, unexplained weight loss, persistent cough or shortness of breath, high fevers, and pain in the stomach or lymph nodes after consuming alcohol. Thursby noted that the pain she experienced when drinking wine is a recognized side effect of Hodgkin lymphoma. “It’s something about the acidity in the wine and not when you drink other alcohol,” she explained.

While the connection between alcohol-related pain and Hodgkin lymphoma has been acknowledged in medical literature since the 1950s, such cases remain relatively rare, as confirmed by Healthline.

Thursby began chemotherapy treatment in November, facing the challenge of caring for her children while managing her illness. The emotional toll is compounded by the loss of her own mother to a blood disorder called myelodysplasia. “I grew up without a mum, and it was horrendous. I can’t do that to the boys,” she expressed. “We’re all devastated, but we all know now, and we’ve got a treatment plan, which is what we need.”

Determined to fight her illness, Thursby remains focused on her recovery. “I’m just doing everything I can to get better for them. I keep telling myself this is only temporary; I just need to keep going,” she said.

Health experts emphasize the importance of consulting a doctor when experiencing pain or other concerning symptoms after consuming alcohol. Early detection and intervention can be crucial in managing serious health conditions.

According to Kennedy News and Media, Thursby’s story serves as a reminder of the need to pay attention to our bodies and seek medical advice when something feels off.
