Virender Sehwag criticizes the Lucknow Super Giants’ management and captain Rishabh Pant for their poor performance in IPL 2026 following a Super Over loss to Kolkata Knight Riders.
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has expressed his discontent with the management of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and their captain, Rishabh Pant, after the team’s disappointing performance in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. His comments came in the wake of LSG’s heartbreaking Super Over loss to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 38.
In a match where LSG was chasing a modest target of 156 runs, the team faltered under pressure, ultimately leading to a Super Over in which they managed to score only a single run. Sehwag, known for his candid opinions, questioned the strategic decisions made by the LSG management, expressing confusion over how the team continues to make the same mistakes while languishing at the bottom of the points table.
Sehwag’s frustration stems from the stark contrast between the team’s potential and their actual performance on the field. The Lucknow Super Giants boast an impressive support staff, including Director of Cricket Tom Moody, Head Coach Justin Langer, and Strategy Coach Kane Williamson. Despite this wealth of cricketing knowledge, Sehwag believes the management is failing to address the team’s fundamental weaknesses.
“Lucknow Super Giants once again failed to chase down a total in this IPL. I just don’t understand. You have a director of cricket and a coach. Kane Williamson, Justin Langer, and Tom Moody are all there. Inka kya dimag nahi chalta? Are they not able to see how their team has been performing? The team is not being able to bat, and still they are winning the toss and inviting the opposition to bat,” Sehwag stated during an interview with a sports channel.
His bewilderment extends to the decisions made regarding batting orders and match strategies. Sehwag pointed out that if LSG had opted to bat first after winning the toss, even a modest score of 140 to 150 runs could have put pressure on KKR. Instead, the team has shown a persistent inclination to chase totals, a strategy that has not yielded positive results.
“If they won the toss and opted to bat first, even if they scored 140 to 150, the pressure would have been on KKR. I cannot understand this. You are not able to chase, but you are hell-bent and fixated on wanting to chase. Ye kahan ki samajhdari hai? Kaun le raha hai decisions?” Sehwag added, emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of their approach.
The crux of Sehwag’s critique lies in the team’s ongoing struggle with their batting lineup, which he describes as fragile. This fixation on chasing has severely impacted LSG’s IPL 2026 campaign, leaving them at the bottom of the points table with only two victories and six defeats in eight matches. With a negative net run rate of -1.106, the prospect of reaching the playoffs appears increasingly grim for Pant and his team.
Sehwag’s insights highlight the importance of strategic flexibility in cricket, particularly in high-stakes tournaments like the IPL. As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether LSG will make the necessary adjustments to turn their fortunes around.
According to Cricbuzz, the Lucknow Super Giants must urgently address their tactical shortcomings to revive their IPL 2026 campaign.
