Vandana Kumar, the publisher and founder of India Currents, was honored with the inaugural Gaurai – Savitribai Phule Award for her dedicated efforts in amplifying Indian-American voices, stories, and community perspectives.
The Gaurai Khela event made its debut in 2026 as a vibrant celebration of Maharashtra’s rich culture, designed to unite Marathi and non-Marathi families and friends. This community gathering took place on Sunday, August 23, at the Downtown Event Center in Fremont, California.
Nearly 800 attendees registered for the inaugural event, which featured a variety of interactive activities that highlighted Maharashtrian traditions, fostering a sense of community among the South Asian diaspora and local residents.
A standout feature of the event was an impressive 8-foot replica of Shaniwar Wada, a historical fortification in Pune, Maharashtra. This replica served as a popular backdrop for photos and conversations, allowing visitors to connect with a familiar symbol of their heritage.
The event also showcased the Saree Mahotsav and Lavanyavati fashion display, which blended traditional Maharashtrian attire with contemporary styles. Participants engaged in Mangalagauri games and dances, transforming cultural traditions into interactive experiences that encouraged participation rather than passive observation.
Food played a central role in the gathering, with a cultural marketplace where vendors, artisans, and local businesses offered a variety of culinary delights and crafts linked to Maharashtra. A Traditional Food Competition brought participants together to showcase their Maharashtrian recipes, while guests enjoyed sampling a range of traditional dishes.
At its core, Gaurai Khela emphasized active participation, inviting attendees to play, dance, don traditional clothing, share food, explore the marketplace, and connect through cultural experiences.
The inaugural event also introduced the Gaurai Awards, which recognize women who have made significant contributions to their communities and created opportunities for others. The Gaurai – Savitribai Phule Award was awarded to Vandana Kumar for her longstanding commitment to amplifying Indian-American voices and perspectives.
In addition, the Gaurai – Dr. Anandi Gopal Joshi Award was presented to Manisha Pathak, founder of the Overseas Organization of Better Bihar, in recognition of her dedication to creating opportunities and making a meaningful impact through her work.
According to the event organizers, Gaurai Khela 2026 marked the beginning of a new tradition centered around culture, participation, and community connection. Vrinda Ghosalkar of the Gaurai Khela Team expressed the significance of launching this event, stating, “It was especially meaningful for us to begin this tradition as part of Gaurai Khela — celebrating not only our culture but also the women who create positive change around us.”
