Srinagar: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, emphasized the importance of sports and tourism in promoting Jammu and Kashmir during the Khelo India Water Sports Festival held at Dal Lake. She stated that the event reflects the Centre’s commitment to nurturing local talent and enhancing tourism in the region.

At the festival’s inaugural event, Khadse remarked, “There is immense potential in J&K. By integrating tourism with sports, we can elevate the region’s profile internationally.” She assured attendees that the government is dedicated to providing high-quality infrastructure and opportunities for young athletes throughout the Union Territory.

We cannot hurt the sentiments of our people.” While acknowledging the role of sports in fostering growth and unity, she underscored that national security and public sentiment must take precedence.

During the event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), Khadse highlighted the participation of over 400 athletes from across India in various competitions, including rowing, canoeing, and kayaking on the picturesque Dal Lake. “The enthusiasm of the youth here is inspiring. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our aim is to strengthen both sports and sports tourism,” she noted.

In her address, Khadse announced plans to establish five Khelo India Centres in every district of Jammu and Kashmir, with ongoing talent identification programs aimed at fostering local athletes. “We want to see youth from J&K on international platforms, bringing home medals and pride,” she added.

The Khelo India Water Sports Festival also showcased cultural performances that highlighted the rich heritage and spirit of Kashmir, marking a significant milestone as the first water sports event of its kind held on Dal Lake.

As the region continues to develop its sports and tourism sectors, the Khelo India initiative aims to create a lasting impact on the local economy and the lives of its youth.
