The 12th edition of the Desi Comedy Fest, showcasing 25 South Asian comedians, returns to the Bay Area from August 18-23, celebrating diverse voices in stand-up comedy.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Desi Comedy Fest, one of the longest-running festivals dedicated to South Asian stand-up comedy, is set to return for its 12th edition across the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento from August 18 to 23. This year’s festival will feature 25 comedians from the United States and Canada.
Founded in 2014 by comedians Samson Koletkar and Abhay Nadkarni, the festival began as a local showcase for South Asian comics. It has since evolved into a significant platform for comedy, with performances extending across North America and India.
This year’s festival promises six nights of stand-up comedy in six different cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, Sunnyvale, Pleasanton, Hayward, and Sacramento. The lineup includes a mix of established headliners, festival regulars, and emerging talents, ensuring a diverse range of comedic styles.
According to the festival organizers, Desi Comedy Fest has played a crucial role in introducing audiences to comedians who have gone on to perform on major platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, NBC, ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, Just For Laughs, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
“Desi Comedy Fest has always been about creating opportunities for talented comedians while bringing people together through laughter,” said co-founder Samson Koletkar. “Over the past twelve years, we’ve watched our audiences become increasingly diverse, proving that great comedy doesn’t need a shared ethnicity; it just needs a shared sense of humor.”
Co-founder Abhay Nadkarni noted that the festival was launched at a time when there were limited platforms for South Asian stand-up comedians. “When we started Desi Comedy Fest, there were very few spaces dedicated to showcasing South Asian comedians,” Nadkarni explained. “Today, we’re seeing South Asian comics appear on major streaming platforms, television, and comedy festivals around the world. We’re proud that Desi Comedy Fest has helped create opportunities, build audiences, and demonstrate that these stories resonate far beyond our own communities.”
This year’s lineup includes notable comedians such as Crystal Ferrier, Faraz Abidi, Harpreet Sehmbi, Jesse Singh, Raza Jafri, and Uzair Malik, alongside festival co-founders Koletkar and Nadkarni. The comedians will present a variety of material, including observational comedy, storytelling, cultural satire, and reflections on everyday experiences.
The festival kicks off on August 18 at Punch Line Comedy Club in San Francisco and wraps up on August 23 at Punch Line Comedy Club in Sacramento. Other venues for the performances include The Sound Room in Oakland, Sunnyvale Theater, Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton, and Douglass Morrison Theater in Hayward.
