The Kennedy Center experienced a partial ceiling collapse, prompting calls for urgent renovations as the Trump-led board pushes for a two-year closure of the iconic performing arts venue.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts recently faced a significant structural issue when a portion of its ceiling collapsed during a rainstorm. This incident, which occurred in the main hallway of the over 50-year-old building, has intensified discussions about the urgent need for renovations.
Roma Daravi, the vice president of public relations for the Kennedy Center, emphasized the importance of addressing the building’s deteriorating condition. “Another example of the urgent need to close for renovation and revitalization, as our Chairman President [Donald] Trump has championed,” Daravi stated. She attributed the structural failure to “decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by the previous leadership,” asserting that there is no justification for further delays in restoring this cultural landmark.
The Kennedy Center’s board, led by Trump, voted in August to close the venue for two years to facilitate extensive renovations. This decision followed a May ruling by a judge, which mandated the removal of Trump’s name from the building, just months after the board had voted to name it “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his frustration with the situation, stating, “Unless I am free to do what I do better than anyone else, bring this Institution back, physically, financially, and artistically, I have no interest in continuing what could only be a hopeless journey into ‘NEVER NEVER LAND.'” He criticized the opposition from “Radical Left Democrats,” claiming they were more focused on opposing him than on preserving the performing arts center, which he described as “dying.”
In a recent move, the board voted to rename the grounds of the Kennedy Center to “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” Additionally, they plan to display a sign on the building stating, “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.” However, the board is currently engaged in legal battles to finalize these name changes and to proceed with the proposed $250 million renovation project.
Grace Terpstra, founder of the community group Keep the KC, has voiced her concerns regarding the board’s intentions. She believes the recent ceiling collapse will be used to justify the closure, suggesting that the board may exaggerate the situation to emphasize the need for immediate action. “I think they’ll try to make it into a bigger thing and show that they’ve found a lot of other things,” Terpstra remarked.
Since the removal of the bronze letters bearing Trump’s name in June, the front of the Kennedy Center has been covered with a tarp and scaffolding. Last week, the center also removed a piece of modern artwork titled “Blue,” which had been displayed outside since 2019. In a statement, the center expressed its honor in having been stewards of the late sculptor Joel Shapiro’s work.
