India has granted ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ an adults-only ‘A’ rating, making it the only country to impose such restrictions on the film.
MUMBAI – ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ has received an adults-only ‘A’ certification in India, a stark contrast to the more lenient ratings the film has garnered worldwide.
Reports indicate that India is the sole nation to restrict the film to viewers aged 18 and above.
Audiences who attended screenings on May 1 and 2 expressed expectations of strong or explicit content due to the film’s rating. However, many viewers reported that the film did not contain such elements, describing it as suitable for family viewing.
In Europe, certification boards have approved the film for younger audiences, allowing for a broader demographic to enjoy it.
In various markets, including Singapore, Indonesia, Bahrain, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates, the film is classified in a way that permits viewers under 18 to watch it with adult supervision. Similarly, countries like the United Kingdom, Brazil, and South Korea have assigned a 12 rating to the film.
Even in regions with stricter guidelines, such as Australia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Russia, the film remains accessible to audiences below 18 under specific conditions.
The film features prominent American actors Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci, alongside British actress Emily Blunt, and is categorized as a comedy-drama.
This situation echoes the release of the 2016 film ‘La La Land,’ which also received an ‘A’ certificate in India despite being widely approved for younger audiences internationally.
As of now, the Central Board of Film Certification has not provided a public explanation for the classification of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2.’
According to India-West, the disparity in ratings has raised questions about the criteria used for film certification in India.
