Leah Stewart, an Australian mother who lost her arm in a shark attack, finds solace in supportive messages from around the world as she navigates her recovery journey.

Leah Stewart, an Australian mother and teacher, is currently recovering from a shark attack that occurred at Coogee Beach in Sydney, where she lost an arm. During her sleepless nights, she has been reading messages of support from people around the globe, which have provided her with comfort and inspiration, according to her family.

In a recent update on GoFundMe, her brother, Joshua Stewart, shared that they have been relaying these heartfelt messages to Leah, who has found strength in the outpouring of care and love. “Leah has had some challenging days but has found real strength from your kindness and support,” he wrote.

Since the incident, Leah has faced difficulties sleeping and has turned to the supportive messages from family, friends, and even strangers. Joshua noted that Leah has been reading messages not only from her community in Australia but also from her whānau in New Zealand, using the Māori term for family. “They’ve given her real comfort and strength,” he added.

The attack occurred on June 13 while Leah was swimming close to shore and within designated safety flags at Coogee Beach. She sustained life-threatening injuries, including multiple bites to her arms and legs, severe lacerations, fractures, and significant blood loss. Following the attack, Leah was placed on life support, entered a medically induced coma, and underwent several surgeries. Ultimately, her treatment required the amputation of one arm, and her family indicated that additional surgeries were planned as doctors worked to stabilize her condition.

After spending ten days in a coma, Leah woke up and expressed her love to her mother and partner, Fernando. Joshua Stewart remarked that her first thoughts were of her young daughter, August, highlighting Leah’s deep connection to her family.

Following her brief awakening, Joshua described the moment as a hopeful first step in Leah’s long recovery journey. “Leah has a long road ahead,” he wrote, emphasizing the challenges she will face moving forward.

The family has also addressed the delays in responding to supporters, explaining that they encountered issues with the GoFundMe messaging system. “Leah is beyond overwhelmed at the amazing support she has received and that her story has resonated with so many people,” Joshua stated, expressing gratitude for the kindness shown to them during this difficult time.

The GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist Leah, her partner, and their young daughter as they navigate this heartbreaking situation. The funds raised will support Leah’s recovery, including prosthetics, rehabilitation, ongoing care, and the significant adjustments she will need to make as she strives to return to her role as a mother.

In addition to the community’s support, Leah’s family has expressed their gratitude to the lifesavers, first responders, helicopter crew, and medical team at St. Vincent’s Hospital who provided care following the attack. “As a family, we are shocked and devastated that this could happen to our beloved partner, daughter, and mother who is so full of life and energy,” Joshua wrote.

As Leah continues her recovery, the messages of support from around the world serve as a reminder of the compassion and solidarity that can emerge in times of crisis, offering her strength as she faces the challenges ahead.

According to Fox News, Leah Stewart’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of community support during difficult times.
