Retired law enforcement officer Juan Mejia, one of the passengers who intervened, recounted the sudden shift from calm to chaos. “Just like a light switch, all of a sudden, it went from quiet to yelling and chaos,” Mejia told CBS Texas. He recalled witnessing the passenger with his hands around the neck of the other man, engaged in an assault.
Flight attendants provided duct tape and zip ties to the three men, who used them to secure the disruptive passenger to his seat. Video footage from the flight reportedly shows the man struggling against the restraints while fellow passengers and crew worked to maintain control. Photos taken during the incident depicted him bound to his seat with duct tape and zip ties, including restraints around his head.
The unexpected diversion led the aircraft to land at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport late Thursday night. Both American Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the flight’s diversion due to a “disruptive customer.”
In a statement to Fox News Digital, American Airlines emphasized that the safety and security of its customers and team members is their top priority, stating, “We do not tolerate violence.” The airline expressed gratitude to its employees for their professionalism and to passengers for their understanding during the incident.
Upon landing, law enforcement officers were present to assist in removing the passenger from the aircraft.
