All lanes on the southbound M6 in Cheshire have reopened following overrunning roadworks, but drivers still face lingering congestion as traffic gradually clears.

Motorists traveling on the M6 in Cheshire faced significant delays after roadworks on the southbound carriageway exceeded their scheduled timeframe. The affected stretch, located between Junction 21A and Junction 21, resulted in lane restrictions and heavy traffic congestion.

Reports indicated that delays reached over 50 minutes, with approximately six miles of queues forming as a result of the disruption. Authorities have since reopened all lanes, allowing for normal traffic flow to resume. However, drivers are still experiencing slower travel times as congestion continues to dissipate.

In addition to the southbound issues, a separate incident on the northbound carriageway also contributed to traffic disruptions. Fortunately, all lanes on the northbound side have since reopened, but motorists are cautioned that delays may persist as traffic gradually recovers from the earlier restrictions.

The primary cause of the delays was the overrunning roadworks between Junction 21A and Junction 21. The extended work period necessitated traffic restrictions, leading to significant backups as vehicles slowed and lanes became limited. Traffic monitoring services, including Inrix, reported that the motorway was “partially blocked” during the roadworks.

As the restrictions were lifted, traffic began to move again, but the residual congestion remained a concern for drivers. Although the motorway is now fully operational, travelers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys as the backlog of traffic clears.

Currently, there are no major diversion routes in effect following the reopening of all lanes on the southbound M6. Drivers can now navigate the motorway as usual, although some delays may linger due to the earlier congestion.

For those planning to travel on the M6 through Cheshire, it is essential to stay informed about potential delays while traffic conditions normalize. Although the motorway has reopened completely, the effects of the earlier disruptions may take time to fully resolve.

Motorists are encouraged to check live traffic updates before embarking on their journeys, particularly during peak travel hours, to ensure a smoother experience on the road.

According to The Sunday Guardian, the situation is expected to improve as traffic continues to clear.
