Amazon’s $5 billion investment in Nvidia AI servers is hindered by power shortages at data centers, leading to concerns over cash flow and the company’s AI expansion strategy.

Amazon is facing significant challenges with its recent investment in artificial intelligence (AI) hardware, as billions of dollars worth of Nvidia AI servers remain idle in warehouses due to electricity shortages at its data centers. This situation raises concerns about the company’s cash flow and the overall cost of its AI expansion efforts.

According to a report by Business Insider, internal communications reveal that Amazon anticipated receiving $5 billion in Nvidia AI server systems in August, with an additional $3 billion expected each subsequent month. However, the company has not disclosed how long this purchasing trend will continue.

As part of a new Early Rack Receipt process, Amazon Web Services (AWS) planned to receive approximately $5 billion worth of Nvidia GB300 server racks at its U.S. facilities prior to their final deployment. Internal emails from August, which were reviewed by Business Insider, indicated that one email projected an ongoing influx of $3 billion worth of GB300 racks each month “for the foreseeable future.”

While some AWS locations have the physical space to accommodate more server racks, they currently lack the necessary power to operate them. Consequently, the completed equipment is being stored in intermediate warehouses until the data centers are prepared to handle the additional load.

At least one AWS team reportedly lacked “a clear forecasted path” for integrating the incoming racks into the data centers, as indicated in one of the internal emails. The report highlights that a shortage of new electricity capacity is one of several bottlenecks impeding the development of certain AI data centers. This has led to the emergence of “dark GPUs,” a term used to describe AI chips and servers that are purchased but remain unused due to power shortages or other logistical challenges.

The delays in deploying these AI servers are also exacerbating financial pressures on large data center projects. Companies are required to invest substantial amounts of money upfront to secure Nvidia GPUs and other critical hardware. However, when data centers are not operational, these investments can lead to significant cash flow constraints. Although debt financing can provide a temporary solution, lenders have recently become more hesitant to finance some of these projects.

Prashant Kalyanaraman, AWS infrastructure chief, characterized Amazon’s AI business as “hugely free cash flow negative,” projecting that the company’s free cash flow will remain negative for the next couple of years, according to reports from Benzinga.

Amazon has committed to a staggering $220 billion in capital investments across the company for the current year. However, its free cash flow has dropped to negative $7.6 billion for the 12 months ending June 30, a stark contrast to the positive $18.2 billion reported a year earlier.

The ongoing power shortages and the resulting idle servers pose a significant challenge for Amazon as it seeks to expand its AI capabilities. The company’s ability to effectively manage these issues will be crucial in determining the success of its AI initiatives moving forward.

As the situation develops, stakeholders will be closely monitoring Amazon’s strategies to address these challenges and the potential impact on its financial health.
