OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup founded by Indian American entrepreneur Ashoka Rajendra, to enhance drug development processes using advanced AI technology.
OpenAI has announced its acquisition of Orchestra Bio, a platform designed to streamline the intricate process of drug development. Founded by Indian American entrepreneur Ashoka Rajendra, Orchestra Bio aims to assist biopharma teams in coordinating their efforts more effectively.
In a statement released on Tuesday, OpenAI expressed its intention to integrate Orchestra’s team and technology with its existing AI models and tools for life sciences research, specifically its Rosalind platform. The goal is to empower scientists to make discoveries and expedite the transition of those discoveries into treatments that can reach patients more swiftly.
Rajendra, who established Orchestra Bio four years ago, shared his enthusiasm for the acquisition on social media platform X. He stated, “Today, we’re thrilled to share that Orchestra Bio is joining OpenAI to continue our mission at an even greater scale.”
While the financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed, reports indicate that Orchestra Bio had raised approximately $20 million by 2025 from notable investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.
Rajendra elaborated on the complexities involved in drug development, noting that it encompasses thousands of decisions and dependencies across various stages, including discovery, preclinical trials, manufacturing, and clinical testing. He emphasized that AI has reached a pivotal moment where it can effectively collaborate with human scientists and program leaders. “Agents can handle planning, orchestration, and analysis, while scientists and program leaders focus on the decisions that require their expertise,” he explained.
OpenAI plans to leverage Orchestra’s expertise and technology to enhance Rosalind and its related tool, the Rosalind Workbench. This tool is designed to assist researchers in planning experiments and analyzing results more efficiently.
OpenAI has already attracted significant clients for its Rosalind platform, including major pharmaceutical companies such as Moderna and Novo Nordisk. Rosalind is equipped with AI models and tools tailored for life sciences researchers, enabling them to tackle questions in biology and chemistry. The GPT-Rosalind feature specifically aids scientists in reasoning through complex scientific inquiries.
The integration of Orchestra Bio’s capabilities is expected to further enhance OpenAI’s offerings. The combined expertise of Orchestra’s team, which boasts experience in biotech, software, and AI, will contribute to the development of agents that facilitate connections between scientific findings and the necessary studies, decisions, and subsequent steps required to advance potential medicines.
This acquisition marks a significant step for OpenAI in its mission to revolutionize the life sciences sector through the application of advanced AI technologies, ultimately aiming to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of drug development processes.
