The Ministry of Education has established a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding a student’s death at IIIT Ranchi and evaluate the institute’s student support systems.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has formed a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a student at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Ranchi. The committee will also assess the effectiveness of the student support systems in place at the institute.

Heading the committee is Prof. Rajni Abbi, Director of the South Campus of the University of Delhi. The panel will also include a senior psychiatrist and a senior officer from the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry has stated that the committee’s purpose is to conduct a thorough examination of the incident and to review the implementation of relevant guidelines at IIIT Ranchi. The inquiry will focus on the availability and functioning of essential facilities, institutional support systems, counseling and mentoring arrangements, and mechanisms for addressing student grievances.

Additionally, the committee is tasked with identifying systemic gaps and recommending measures to enhance student welfare, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As part of its investigation, the panel will engage with relevant stakeholders and review necessary records and documents to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and evaluate the existing support arrangements at the institute.

The Ministry’s intervention comes at a time of heightened focus on student well-being and the responsibilities of higher educational institutions to provide adequate support systems. The committee will examine areas such as counseling services, mentoring arrangements, and accessible grievance redressal mechanisms.

In light of the situation, the Ministry has also indicated that it is implementing interim administrative measures to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of IIIT Ranchi, prioritizing the interests and well-being of students.

IIIT Ranchi operates as a public-private partnership institution, and the committee’s examination will include a review of the institute’s administrative and student support arrangements.

The findings and recommendations from the panel are anticipated to assist the Ministry in evaluating whether the current institutional mechanisms are sufficient and in identifying necessary improvements to student welfare and campus support systems.

While the Ministry has not provided a specific timeline for the committee to submit its report, further actions will be considered based on the committee’s assessment and recommendations, according to The Sunday Guardian.
