In a trailer for the latest season of “The Kardashians,” the 45-year-old reality star disclosed that she has been diagnosed with esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus. This revelation is particularly poignant as her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59.
In the trailer, Kardashian is seen lying on a hospital bed when someone off-camera inquires, “Didn’t your father … isn’t it what he died of?” This question prompts an emotional response from her mother and manager, Kris Jenner, who replies, “I can’t. It makes me want to cry.”
Despite the emotional connection, experts emphasize that esophagitis and esophageal cancer are not the same condition. Esophagitis is primarily caused by factors such as acid reflux, certain medications, infections, or allergies, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
In contrast, esophageal cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the tissues lining the esophagus, as defined by the National Cancer Institute. There are two primary types of esophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
While esophagitis itself does not directly lead to cancer, chronic inflammation can sometimes result in Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition that increases the risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma. This risk is notably higher among individuals suffering from ongoing acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
According to the NIDDK, approximately 5% to 15% of individuals with GERD may develop Barrett’s esophagus. However, it is important to note that most people with Barrett’s do not go on to develop esophageal cancer.
