India’s “Cockroach” movement has ended its weeks-long protests following the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, marking a significant victory for the demonstrators advocating for educational reforms.
NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s “Cockroach” movement officially called off its weeks of protests on Saturday, announcing that the government had accepted all of its demands after the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His resignation came amid allegations of exam paper leaks and irregularities within the education system.
Pradhan shared his resignation via a post on X, representing a notable victory for the youth-led movement that had organized nationwide demonstrations, sit-ins, and hunger strikes. This resignation marks the first major concession from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in response to one of the most significant waves of public dissent it has faced in recent years.
During Modi’s more than 12 years in office, the government has rarely yielded to sustained public pressure. The most notable exception occurred in 2021 when it was compelled to withdraw controversial farm laws after a yearlong protest by farmers.
The “Cockroach” movement began over a month ago in response to allegations of leaks in some of India’s largest entrance exams. Initially focused on demanding education reforms, the movement quickly expanded to encompass broader issues such as unemployment, government accountability, and economic opportunities. Students, professionals, families, and activists participated in rallies across New Delhi and other cities throughout India.
Following Pradhan’s resignation, movement organizers announced the end of protests, stating that the government had accepted their remaining demands. These demands included comprehensive reforms to India’s education system, compensation for families of students who died by suicide due to exam paper leaks, and a commitment to refrain from legal action against protest participants.
“We urge everyone to peacefully withdraw from protest sites,” said Ashutosh Ranka, spokesperson for the Cockroach Janta Party, which initiated the protest movement, during a news briefing in New Delhi.
The news of Pradhan’s resignation ignited celebrations among the thousands of protesters who had been camped at the protest site in New Delhi for over a month. Many embraced one another and waved the Indian flag in a show of solidarity.
Prachi Kumar, a corporate employee who joined the protests, expressed that Pradhan’s resignation was essential for restoring accountability within the education system. “This had to be done. Someone must be held accountable,” she stated.
The Cockroach Janta Party declared victory following the resignation, posting on X: “DEMOCRACY WINS!”
The demonstrations represented one of the most persistent challenges to Modi’s government in recent years, with thousands returning to the streets even after police used tear gas and batons to disperse crowds.
Tensions escalated earlier in the week when police attempted to disperse thousands of protesters marching toward Parliament, resulting in injuries among several students during the crackdown and intensifying anger among demonstrators.
In an effort to alleviate tensions, Modi’s government had previously announced the establishment of fast-track courts for cases involving exam paper leaks and proposed legislation aimed at strengthening measures against cheating and corruption in the examination system. However, these measures failed to satisfy protesters, who argued that they did not adequately address the need for government accountability.
Opposition parties, which rallied in support of the protests, asserted that Pradhan’s resignation demonstrated the government’s capitulation to sustained public pressure.
Rahul Gandhi, the main opposition leader in Parliament, characterized the resignation as a “major step toward revamping our education system,” highlighting the significance of this moment in the ongoing struggle for educational reform in India.
