Filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh reflects on launching Deepika Padukone’s career with her debut in the Kannada film ‘Aishwarya,’ highlighting her talent and confidence during their first meeting.

MUMBAI—Filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh has revisited a pivotal moment in his career, recalling how he launched Deepika Padukone’s acting journey with the Kannada film Aishwarya.

In an interview with IANS, Lankesh shared that he was in search of a new heroine when he received a recommendation for Deepika. Their initial meeting was facilitated by Pooja Dadlani, who managed Padukone at the time and is currently known for her role as Shah Rukh Khan’s manager.

“I was looking for a new heroine, and someone recommended Deepika,” Lankesh stated.

He recounted their first encounter, which took place in a lift. “I started narrating the story. I had barely spoken two lines when she was convinced. That’s how Deepika was cast in Aishwarya. She already had the confidence. I just created an atmosphere where she could perform fearlessly,” he explained.

Lankesh quickly recognized Padukone’s potential, noting her height, appearance, screen presence, and, most importantly, her determination to succeed. “I told her one day she’d become a Hollywood star. Years later, when she worked with Vin Diesel, I remembered that conversation,” he reflected.

The filmmaker also clarified a common misconception regarding Padukone’s career timeline. He stated that she was not involved in the Hindi film Om Shanti Om while filming Aishwarya. According to Lankesh, it was only after Aishwarya completed a successful 100-day theatrical run that Shah Rukh Khan cast her in the Hindi film.

Aishwarya, directed by Lankesh, marked Deepika Padukone’s acting debut opposite Upendra in 2006. This film not only launched her career but also set the stage for her future successes in both Indian and international cinema.

According to IANS, Lankesh’s insights provide a glimpse into the early days of Padukone’s illustrious career, showcasing the talent that would eventually make her a global star.
