India Currents is launching new newsletters to address the unique experiences of Indian-Americans in the Bay Area, focusing on aging, caregiving, belonging, and cultural identity.
Earlier this year, India Currents was selected to join Documented’s inaugural newsroom cohort for the Building Bridges: An Immigrant Media Training Program.
This initiative, running from January to June 2026, aims to provide intensive, hands-on support to six newsrooms, enabling them to create editorial products that are rooted in inclusive, ethical, and high-quality journalism. The goal is to serve and engage immigrant communities effectively.
As part of this process, India Currents conducted a community needs assessment, posing a direct question to its audience: What topics does India Currents need to cover that are currently overlooked?
The response was overwhelming, with hundreds of community members sharing their thoughts and experiences.
Many expressed their fatigue with the typical success stories often highlighted in media. Instead, they seek coverage of the challenges faced by the sandwich generation, which includes individuals juggling the responsibilities of caring for aging parents while raising children. Others highlighted the persistent discrimination that continues to affect their lives, regardless of how long they have lived in the United States.
Additionally, respondents voiced concerns about the cultural identity that seems to be fraying across generations. They shared feelings of grief that often go unspoken, lacking words in any of the languages they speak. Many indicated that they find more trust in their WhatsApp groups than in traditional media, preferring concise updates delivered via email.
What emerged from this feedback is a clear message: the Indian-American experience, particularly the complexities of aging, belonging, and cultural identity, deserves more nuanced representation in media.
In response, India Currents is developing something new: three monthly newsletters, each focusing on a different aspect of immigrant life in the United States. These newsletters will cover Aging and Caregiving, Belonging, and Culture.
Currently, the team is in the testing phase of this initiative, ensuring that they get it right before the official launch.
If you would like to be among the first readers to provide feedback on these newsletters, please reach out via email at prachi@indiacurrents.com.
According to India Currents, this new direction aims to reflect the real lives and stories of Indian-Americans, addressing the issues that matter most to the community.
