Indian American Kannan Srinivasan, a Virginia State Senator, has been elected Treasurer of the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus. This appointment places him in a pivotal leadership position within the party’s governing structure.

Expressing his gratitude, Srinivasan shared on X, “I am honored to be elected Treasurer of the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus. I am grateful for the trust of my colleagues and look forward to working with them to keep the caucus strong, organized, and focused on delivering affordability, opportunity, and practical results for families across the Commonwealth.”

The Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus consists of Democratic members of the state Senate and is responsible for coordinating legislative priorities, internal strategies, and leadership elections. The caucus plays a crucial role in managing operations and organizational matters within the chamber, especially as Democrats currently hold a narrow majority in the 40-member Senate.

Srinivasan succeeds Ghazala Hashmi, another Indian American who previously held the treasurer position in 2023 before becoming the Lieutenant Governor this year. Srinivasan, who represents District 32 in Eastern Loudoun, assumed his Senate office in January 2025 after winning a special election.

Before his election to the State Senate, Srinivasan made history as the first Indian American immigrant to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates. Born in Chennai, India, he earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Madras and became one of the youngest individuals to complete the Chartered Accountant professional certification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

In 1992, Srinivasan immigrated to Virginia to pursue a master’s degree in accounting at Old Dominion University. His professional background includes serving as the chair of the Virginia Medicaid Board, where he focused on healthcare access, consumer protection, and addressing the opioid crisis.

In recognition of his advocacy for adults with severe disabilities, Srinivasan received the 2025 Hero Award from SPARC (Specially Adapted Resource Centers).

As he steps into this new role, Srinivasan’s leadership is expected to play a vital part in advancing the Democratic agenda in Virginia, particularly in addressing the needs of families across the Commonwealth.

According to The American Bazaar, Srinivasan’s election as treasurer reflects the growing influence of Indian Americans in Virginia politics.
