A significant water main break in West Hollywood flooded streets, damaged vehicles, and created a large sinkhole, leading to extensive road closures near the Sunset Strip.
A substantial water main break occurred early Thursday in West Hollywood, resulting in severe flooding, vehicle damage, and the formation of a large sinkhole. The incident prompted widespread road closures in the area, particularly near the bustling Sunset Strip.
The rupture took place shortly before 4 a.m. on a 36-inch water transmission pipe managed by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). The high-pressure break unleashed torrents of water down Palm Avenue and surrounding streets, inundating underground parking garages, stranding vehicles, and disrupting traffic in one of the city’s busiest corridors.
Firefighters were dispatched to rescue residents trapped in flooded underground structures, while public works crews worked diligently to isolate the damaged pipeline. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
LADWP officials announced that water to the compromised line was shut off after crews gradually closed large underground valves to prevent further damage to the aging distribution system. Repair work is set to commence once floodwaters are pumped out and engineers complete an assessment of the affected infrastructure.
“We’ll pump the water out of the hole that we have,” said LADWP Chief Operating Officer Anselmo Collins during a news conference. “We’ll make an assessment. That will determine then how long it will take us to make the repairs.”
Collins acknowledged the challenges posed by Los Angeles’ aging water network but noted that the utility replaces approximately 45 miles of pipeline each year as part of an ongoing infrastructure improvement program. The city maintains about 7,400 miles of water pipes.
In response to the flooding, authorities closed several major roads, including eastbound Sunset Boulevard between Larrabee Street and Sherbourne Drive, as well as portions of Holloway Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard, and Palm Avenue. Motorists were urged to avoid the area while repairs are underway.
The flooding caused damage to multiple parked vehicles, including those in underground garages, and a Metro bus was reported to be partially submerged in the floodwaters. Emergency crews continued to inspect nearby buildings for potential structural damage throughout the day.
Officials reassured the public that drinking water remains safe despite the pipe failure, with service interruptions limited to a small number of customers directly connected to the damaged main.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges associated with aging infrastructure in Southern California. Similar water main failures have occurred periodically in the Los Angeles area, leading to renewed calls for increased investment in replacing older pipelines before they fail.
