Amar Mukunda, an Indian American candidate for the Maryland State Senate, has received an endorsement from the Sierra Club, highlighting his commitment to environmental advocacy.

Amar Mukunda, an Indian American advocate for gun violence and addiction prevention, is running for the Maryland State Senate seat from District 39. He has recently secured an endorsement from the Sierra Club, a prominent U.S. environmental organization.

Mukunda is competing in the Democratic primary scheduled for June 23, aiming to represent a suburban district that includes Germantown, Montgomery Village, Clarksburg, and parts of North Potomac, Boyds, and Rockville in Montgomery County.

He is among 32 candidates for state senator, 77 candidates for state delegate, and 41 candidates for various offices across eight of Maryland’s counties who have received endorsements from the Sierra Club. The organization supports candidates committed to clean air, clean water, wildlife conservation, and proactive measures to combat climate change.

Carlo Sanchez, chair of the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter, emphasized the importance of this election cycle, stating, “At a time when the Federal Government is taking steps back when it comes to the environment, we have an opportunity to elect candidates who will ensure that Maryland continues to be a standard bearer when it comes to environmental policy.” He added that the upcoming election will determine the direction of Maryland for at least the next decade.

The Sierra Club expressed strong support for Mukunda in District 39, as well as for Raaheela Ahmed in District 23. The organization believes that both candidates will serve as more effective advocates for environmental legislation compared to the current state senators in their respective districts.

Mukunda holds a master’s degree in Energy and Infrastructure Engineering from Stanford University. As an entrepreneur, he has founded two companies and has played a significant role in community initiatives, including the establishment of Roca, a large community-based program focused on gun violence and addiction prevention.

In addressing traffic congestion on I-270, Mukunda advocates for substantial investments in public transportation, including Metro and rail systems. He also promotes the creation of clean energy opportunity zones aimed at accelerating decarbonization and generating local employment opportunities.

The son of immigrants from Pakistan and India, Mukunda was raised in Montgomery County and served as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army Reserve. His campaign highlights his experience in running Maryland’s largest gun violence prevention program.

According to his campaign site, Mukunda is dedicated to lowering the cost of living, supporting youth development, and improving transportation in UpCounty. He has outlined four key goals: to reclaim democracy, make the American Dream affordable, ensure gun-free, world-class schools, and meet the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and climate change.

This endorsement from the Sierra Club underscores Mukunda’s commitment to environmental issues and his vision for a sustainable future in Maryland, aligning with the organization’s mission to promote environmental stewardship.
