Scientist Satchidananda Panda resigns from the Salk Institute following an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, marking the end of his 22-year tenure at the institution.
SAN DIEGO, CA – Satchidananda Panda, a prominent scientist at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, will resign on August 13 after an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, as reported by Science magazine and other media outlets.
Panda, who has served at the institute for 22 years, has denied the allegations against him. His resignation follows a similar incident eight years ago when another high-profile Salk scientist, Inder Verma, stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations, which he also denied.
In an internal email reviewed by Science, Salk President Gerald Joyce informed faculty members of Panda’s impending departure. Panda is recognized internationally for his research on circadian rhythms, light sensing, and intermittent fasting. He has expressed intentions to write a book focused on how advancements in circadian biology could enhance human health.
“I deny the allegations and accusations,” Panda stated. “I am deeply committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and professional environment for everyone in my research team and across the Institute. These values are central to my leadership.”
The investigation into Panda’s conduct was initiated after a research assistant in his laboratory raised concerns about his behavior earlier this year. Following the complaint, the Salk Institute confirmed that it had commissioned an independent investigation.
Tiffany Chin, a former graduate student who left Panda’s lab in April, shared with Science that the research assistant alleged Panda had given her massages in his office and reacted angrily when she declined a foot massage, suggesting that her rejection could hinder her career in science. Chin noted that the assistant feared that refusing Panda’s advances might jeopardize her job or impact her ability to secure a recommendation letter.
Sources familiar with the complaint indicated that the assistant also alleged that Panda had consumed alcohol with her in his office and made sexually explicit remarks. Following these incidents, the assistant reportedly took an extended leave before resigning.
Additionally, Science reported that the Salk Institute had previously investigated Panda over another harassment allegation involving a former lab member, who claimed that Panda suggested they share a hotel room during a conference. According to a source familiar with that incident, the institute took disciplinary action at that time.
The resignation of Satchidananda Panda highlights ongoing concerns regarding workplace conduct in academic research settings, particularly in institutions renowned for their scientific contributions.
