Experts warn that taking oral Wegovy with morning coffee or tea may hinder the medication’s effectiveness in weight management.

Individuals using oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, such as Wegovy tablets, are advised to avoid consuming morning coffee or tea when taking their medication. According to FDA prescribing information, Wegovy should be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of water, and no other liquids should be consumed at that time.

Patients are instructed to wait at least 30 minutes after taking the medication before eating, drinking other beverages, or taking any oral medications. As the first FDA-approved oral medication for chronic weight management, Wegovy has distinct guidelines compared to its injectable counterparts, particularly regarding how food and drink can affect absorption through the digestive system.

Dr. Michael Hall, a board-certified physician and longevity specialist, emphasized the importance of taking oral Wegovy correctly. “Oral Wegovy should be taken on an empty stomach, only with water,” he stated. “Coffee, tea, juice, or other drinks should not be taken with the pill because they can interfere with how the medicine is absorbed,” he explained to Fox News Digital.

For those using oral GLP-1 medications, Dr. Hall recommends a specific morning routine to ensure optimal absorption. “Food and beverages other than water, and other oral medicines, can affect absorption if taken too soon,” he noted. “The safest rule is 30 minutes of nothing by mouth except water after the tablet.”

Additionally, Dr. Hall pointed out that GLP-1 medications can slow stomach emptying, which may further impact the absorption of other oral medications.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst for Fox News, concurred with Dr. Hall’s advice, stating that a GLP-1 pill should only be taken on an empty stomach with water. He mentioned that while drinking tea throughout the day generally does not interfere with oral GLP-1s or block their absorption, patients should still consult their physicians for personalized advice.

Dr. Siegel also highlighted that certain types of tea, such as green, black, and white teas, can aid digestion. Meanwhile, ginger and peppermint teas may help alleviate nausea, which can be beneficial for some patients.

Fox News Digital reached out to Wegovy’s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, for further comment on the matter.

As the popularity of weight-loss medications like Wegovy continues to rise, understanding the proper administration and potential interactions with common beverages is crucial for users aiming to achieve effective results.

For more information on health and wellness, readers can refer to various health news sources and consult their healthcare providers for tailored guidance.

According to Fox News, following these guidelines can help ensure that users of oral Wegovy maximize the medication’s effectiveness in their weight management journey.
