Indian luxury weddings are increasingly focusing on exclusive destination venues and immersive experiences that enhance guest engagement and cultural exploration.
In recent years, Indian luxury weddings have seen a significant shift towards destination venues and immersive guest experiences. Couples are allocating larger budgets for venues, hospitality, and multi-day celebrations that allow guests to engage with local culture and create lasting memories.
Destination weddings now account for a substantial percentage of overall weddings in India. Popular domestic locations include Goa, Rajasthan, and Kerala, while Thailand and Bali are favored overseas choices. Notably, Sri Lanka has emerged as the fastest-growing wedding destination, with projections indicating a 20-25 percent annual growth in Indian wedding bookings to the island nation over the next few years.
According to reports, top-booked properties in Sri Lanka for weddings in 2025 include Shangri-La in Hambantota and Colombo, Amaya Hills in Kandy, The Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, and Jetwing Lagoon in Negombo. Thailand remains the most sought-after destination overall.
WedMeGood, a popular wedding planning platform, highlights that Vietnam and Malaysia are also gaining traction as destination wedding venues. In Europe, couples are gravitating towards Italy, France, Greece, Spain, and Portugal for their nuptials. Within India, the top five wedding destinations are Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Shimla, and Jim Corbett, followed closely by Udaipur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Goa.
Mehak Shahani, co-founder of WedMeGood, notes that Indian weddings are undergoing a transformation. “Couples today are investing not just in celebrations, but in creating meaningful experiences that bring family and friends together. Wedding budgets continue to evolve alongside these expectations,” she said.
Yashwini Naik, global sales director at Shangri-La Group, adds that couples are moving away from the traditional model of back-to-back events. “They’ve adopted a slow-travel mindset, where each experience is designed for atmosphere and connection rather than volume,” she explained.
Recent geopolitical events, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, have also influenced destination wedding plans for many Indian couples. Following the U.S. and Israel’s attack on Iran on February 28 and the subsequent retaliatory strikes, international travel faced disruptions. Airlines, affected by longer routes and rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, increased fares, further complicating travel plans.
Despite these challenges, experts believe that couples will continue to seek international destinations, albeit with some adjustments to their plans. Shashank Gupta of Tailor Made Experiences, a luxury wedding consulting and experience design company, notes that concerns about regional stability in West Asia have prompted couples to consider alternatives that offer greater certainty and seamless guest experiences.
“While there is no consolidated industry data yet on the number of weddings that have shifted from the Middle East, we are witnessing a clear increase in inquiries and site visits from Indian families evaluating Sri Lanka as an alternative,” Gupta added.
As the landscape of luxury weddings in India continues to evolve, the focus on exclusive venues and immersive experiences is likely to shape the future of wedding celebrations, making them not just events, but memorable journeys for all involved.
