The Cockroach Janta Party has announced a “Jail Bharo Andolan” for October 2, following the denial of protest permission by Mumbai Police for a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
NEW DELHI – The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has declared a “Jail Bharo Andolan” set for October 2. This decision follows the denial of permission by Mumbai Police for a planned protest at Shivaji Park in honor of Gandhi Jayanti, aimed at calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the CJP, stated that the protest was intended to address allegations against Kumar, who has been accused of tampering with voter rolls. An investigative report has suggested that these actions have led to skewed election results across various states. Kumar, a BJP appointee with longstanding ties to Gujarat, is perceived as having favored the ruling party, contrary to the positions of the other two officials on the Election Commission.
Calls for Kumar’s resignation have intensified, with social media users, opposition parties led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and the CJP all voicing their demands for accountability.
In a post on X, Dipke announced the planned agitation, asserting that the CJP would proceed with the “Jail Bharo Andolan” if they were not permitted to demonstrate peacefully.
This announcement coincides with growing concerns within the CJP regarding the detention of its co-convenor, Ashutosh Ranka, along with approximately 40 volunteers in Guwahati, Assam. Ranka had traveled to Assam with the intent of meeting CJP volunteers at the residence of Kunki Chowdhury, a leader of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, located in Dispur near the state secretariat.
According to Dipke, police intervened to prevent the meeting and subsequently detained Ranka and the other volunteers. The CJP has claimed that the detainees were not informed of the reasons for their arrest or the charges against them.
In a video shared on his X account while being transported in a police vehicle, Ranka alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had ordered the police action. He stated that the CJP intended to raise awareness about the conditions of schools in the state, as well as issues related to evictions in Kaziranga and what he described as man-made floods. Ranka also claimed that constituency boundaries had been redrawn to favor Sarma in the upcoming assembly elections.
The CJP’s planned “Jail Bharo Andolan” reflects a broader discontent with the current political climate and the actions of the Election Commission. As the party prepares for this significant protest, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these escalating tensions.
