SANTA BARBARA, CA – The body of Vikram Mubayi, a doctoral student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was recovered on August 3 in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Mubayi had been missing since embarking on a hiking trip.
He was last in contact with his family on the evening of August 1 while in the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest. Following his disappearance, a search operation was promptly initiated, involving local rescue teams. His body was ultimately located and recovered by the California Highway Patrol.
Mubayi was pursuing a PhD in chemical engineering, having started his doctoral studies in 2022. His research focused on employing biological methods to decompose plant waste and plastics, with the goal of creating more sustainable alternatives. In addition to his research, he served as a teaching assistant for several courses.
He completed his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022.
Raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi was described by family members as an experienced hiker with a passion for outdoor activities.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the circumstances of his death.
