Genelia Deshmukh reflects on her father-in-law Vilasrao Deshmukh’s legacy as her sons, Riaan and Rahyl, share their affectionate memories of him with their father, Riteish Deshmukh.
MUMBAI—Genelia Deshmukh recently commemorated the 14th death anniversary of her father-in-law, Vilasrao Deshmukh, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra. In a heartfelt tribute, she shared an emotional note that highlighted a touching exchange between her sons, Riaan and Rahyl, and their father, actor Riteish Deshmukh.
Genelia recounted how her children often tell Riteish, “My Baba is the bestest.” Riteish, in turn, responds with a playful retort: “You never met my Baba. He beats your Baba hands down.” This lighthearted banter reflects the deep affection and admiration the family holds for both their fathers.
In her note, Genelia expressed her longing for her sons to have known their grandfather, stating, “We wish they met you.” Her words encapsulate the sentiment of loss and the desire for familial connections that transcend generations.
Along with her tribute, Genelia shared a touching video featuring Riteish walking alongside Riaan and Rahyl. The trio is seen folding their hands in a gesture of respect, a poignant reminder of the values instilled in them by their family.

In his emotional caption, Riteish wrote in Marathi: “Tumhala jaoon 14 varsh jhaali. Maajhi vanvaas kaahi sampla naahi,” which translates to, “It has been 14 years since you left, but my exile still hasn’t ended.” This poignant reflection underscores the lasting impact Vilasrao had on Riteish’s life.
Vilasrao Deshmukh was diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2011, and his health significantly declined in August 2012. He was initially admitted to a hospital in Mumbai before being airlifted to Chennai for a liver transplant. Unfortunately, he passed away on August 14, 2012, due to multiple organ failure.
During his political career, Vilasrao Deshmukh served as the 14th Chief Minister of Maharashtra for two terms, from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2008. He later joined the Union Cabinet, where he held important portfolios in Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.
This anniversary serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy Vilasrao Deshmukh left behind, not only in the political arena but also within his family, who continue to cherish his memory.
