On a remarkable day for mountaineering, 274 climbers reached the summit of Mount Everest, setting a new record for successful ascents in a single day.
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A historic achievement unfolded on Wednesday as 274 climbers successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest in a single day, according to officials. This record-breaking ascent was made possible by favorable weather conditions, as noted by Rishi Ram Bhandari of the Expedition Operators Association Nepal.
This remarkable feat marks the highest number of climbers to reach the summit in one day via the popular route on the southern face of the mountain in Nepal. The peak can be accessed from either the southern side in Nepal or the northern face in Tibet, China. However, this year, Chinese authorities have closed the route, limiting the climbing activity to the Nepalese side.
The previous record for the most climbers reaching the summit in a single day was set on May 22, 2019, when 223 climbers ascended from Nepal and 113 from China. This year’s climbing season has seen a surge in activity, with around 494 climbers, along with an equal number of Sherpa guides, expected to attempt the ascent before the season concludes at the end of May.
In addition to the record number of climbers, this season has also seen notable achievements among veteran mountaineers. Kami Rita Sherpa, a renowned mountain guide, scaled Everest for the 32nd time, breaking his own record for the most ascents. His closest rival, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, reached the summit for the 30th time this week. Furthermore, Lakpa Sherpa achieved her 11th ascent, setting a new record for the highest number of climbs by a female climber.
This year’s climbing season began later than usual due to concerns over a large serac, a massive block of ice, that posed a risk along the key route to the summit. Despite these challenges, the enthusiasm among climbers remains high, reflecting the enduring allure of the world’s highest peak.
Since the first successful ascent on May 29, 1953, by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay, thousands of climbers have attempted to conquer Mount Everest, making it one of the most sought-after achievements in the world of mountaineering.
As the climbing season progresses, the excitement surrounding Everest continues to grow, with climbers eagerly awaiting their chance to etch their names into the annals of mountaineering history.
According to AP, the record-setting day has reignited interest in climbing expeditions and showcases the resilience and determination of those who seek to reach the summit of this iconic mountain.
