Former India captain Mithali Raj has endorsed Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues as potential future leaders of the Indian women’s T20I team, emphasizing their readiness to succeed Harmanpreet Kaur.
NEW DELHI – Mithali Raj, the former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, has expressed her support for young players Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues as future leaders of the T20I squad. She believes both players are “truly prepared” to take over the captaincy from Harmanpreet Kaur.
Mithali’s endorsement comes on the heels of India’s disappointing performances in the group stages of two consecutive ICC Women’s T20 World Cups under Harmanpreet’s leadership. Despite these setbacks, Harmanpreet is set to lead the team in upcoming tournaments, including the Women’s Asia Cup scheduled for August-September and the Asian Games in Japan from September to October.
In a recent interaction on the social media platform X, Mithali addressed a fan’s inquiry regarding her preference for Shafali over the current vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana. She clarified that her comments were aimed at the long-term vision for the team.
“That’s a fair question. This isn’t about Smriti’s ability to lead, and I have no doubt about that, which is why I’ve mentioned that she’s well suited to captain India in the longer formats,” Mithali stated on X.
Elaborating on her support for Shafali, who led India to victory in the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in 2023, Mithali noted, “My thought on Shafali is more about looking ahead. She’s still young, has one of the best strike rates, can bowl, and has been part of the T20 setup since 2019; leadership is developed not on the shelf but on the field.”
Regarding Jemimah Rodrigues, who captained the Delhi Capitals to a runners-up finish in the 2026 Women’s Premier League, Mithali remarked, “Likewise, Jemimah is a part of every international T20 league. It’s true she didn’t have a good World Cup, but that can happen to any player.”
Mithali further praised Jemimah’s contributions, stating, “She is a team player, selfless, and an excellent player of spin; she also saves 20-25 runs every game with her fielding, which often goes unnoticed. So according to me, both are truly prepared.”
